Achievement First Lesson Planning Template Teacher: Date: AIMS for the class (on the board before class starts): SWBAT use their sense of touch to observe the physical properties of various substances. AGENDA with times for each item (on board before class starts): Do now: Review of 5 senses Intro: Using the sense of touch Guided: How to treat materials / Words to use Touch the different materials. Independent: Glue/draw/tape materials into their feely book. Subject: Science Class: EXIT SLIP / Assessment of FIRM MASTERY of the Aims: SW create a Feelie book to describe the way different materials feel, with new vocabulary. Materials (provided): Tree shapes (enough for 1 per scholar) Cotton, Lotion, Sandpaper sheets, Tape/Adhesive, Shaving cream Trays with water (station) Chart with each of the materials listed. Feelie Books/ Notebooks Preparation (not provided): Retrieve cold water from refrigerator. Retrieve hot water from water cooler. Set up stations/devise rotation Vocab words for word wall/chart. For scholars individually or to share: Crayons, pencils, glue Quick Questions / Do Now (Cumulative Review and Geared for Quick Success) 3-5 minutes Ask the students what part of the body they use to see. Eyes. To hear? Ears. Taste? Tongue. Feel? All over the body? Does your hair "feel" it when you cut it? What about your fingernails? Why doesn't it hurt when you cut your fingernails? You feel with your skin. Only the skin? If you break a bone does the bone hurt inside? Can you feel under your skin? Yes, your sense of feeling is everywhere in your body. We will discover a lot of the answers to these questions as we perform our activities. 2) Students go over the AIMS and AGENDA for the class (on the board) 30 seconds to 1 minute 3) Mini-Lesson / Modeling (“I” or “I/We”) 5-15 minutes Key Vocabulary 0-5 minutes, interwoven TW explain that when we touch things, they feel a certain way. There are Cold lots of juicy words to help us describe how they feel. TW explain that things may feel hard, bumpy or rough. TW ask scholars to Warm foamy Wet think of any things that they think are rough. TW explain that some things are dry and some are wet. TW ask scholars to dry soft sticky think of any things they think are dry/wet. fluffy TW explain that some things are fluffy, soft, or foamy. TW ask scholars to name things they know that are fluffy, soft or foamy (which means it is full hard rough of air, puffy) TW ask scholars to name things that are sticky. These are all words to describe how things feel when we touch them We will be touching a lot of different materials in centers. When we are touching the materials, we should treat them gently so that the next group can use them too. TW model touching or dipping in fingers gently so as not to drip water and make a mess. CFU: how should we feel the water? (just dip your fingers) CFU: how should we leave our centers (clean, like the way we found them) 4) Guided Practice (“We”) 5-20 minutes Key questions to check for understanding during GP: SW spend about 4 minutes at different stations: (Level 1 and Level 2) 1) different temperatures of water 2) sandpaper & cotton 3) lotion & shaving cream 4) tape/adhesive SW carry their “Feely Book”. At each station, scholars will be asked to decide which word describes the materials they are touching (they will write the correct one on the line for the material’s page). After scholars have cycled through the stations, call them back to the carpet and share their findings on a chart. On the chart, prepared with the materials, go through each material, and ask “How did it feel when you touched the sandpaper”. If scholars do not produce correct vocabulary, ask, Don’t you think the sandpaper felt rough on your skin? TW write the correct descriptive word next to the material on the chart (as given by scholar answers) 5) Way to Check for Understanding before Independent Practice 1-3 minutes (proceed only if class masters) TW model gluing the materials on their feelie books. Preparation (pass out squares of sandpaper and cotton balls for gluing) 6) Independent (or pair / small group) Practice (“You”): SW construct a "Feelie Book" in which they tape or glue or draw (for wet materials) a different material or object on each page. Students label each page as rough, scratchy, bumpy, soft, smooth, etc. - Glue sandpaper and cotton - Draw lotion, shaving cream, water (hot and cold) - Tape a piece of tape 6a) Cumulative Review #1 If time permits, 3-5 minutes SW come to carpet and share their Feelie Books with a partner. SW share their favorite material to touch and why. 8) Exit Slip / Final Assessment of FIRM MASTERY of the Aim: 1-5 minutes At least 2 of the pages are correctly labeled with a descriptive word appropriate to the material. Material sandpaper cotton lotion tape (sticky side) tape (other side) water shaving cream How did it feel?
