UNR Parking Services and Disability Access By: Joel Hernandez, Karina Chavez, Jordana Oseto, and Hannah Nystrom of George McKinlay’s Disabilities class at the University of Nevada, Reno Living with disabilities can be challenging but dealing with issues of access is another barrier. At the University of Nevada, Reno there is great resources for equal access, but it is not all organized in one place and can be tricky to locate. This part of the project will focus on Disabled Parking access. Disabled Parking Permits How to get one? Check list [√] of things you will need. 1. Valid State Drivers License 2. University ID 3. Valid DMV Disabled Persons Plates or Placard 4. Complete a Parking Application To get a Disable Parking Permit you need the items listed above: 1. Valid Drivers License 2. University ID 3. Valid DMV Disabled Persons issued Placard or Vehicle Registration Plate Then you will have to visit their office (contact info above) to fill out a Parking Application. Disabled Vistors Disabled Visitors can get a One-day Temporary University Parking permit or Day Pass for the daily parking fee that is currently $3 dollars from the Parking & Transportation Services office. The requirement of having a Valid DMV Disabled Persons issued Placard or Vehicle Registration Plate still applies. The Parking Services does have a “Campus Disabled Parking Map” on their website, which highlights ADA Building Access and ADA Parking Locations. The ADA Parking Locations are scattered all over campus, however we examined a popular parking lot directly in from of the Joe Crowley Student Union and Mathewson – IGT Knowledge Center. There are “Disabled Accessible Parking Meters” there that do not require a campus parking permit but do require the display of a DMV issued placard or plate and payment of the meter. Coming on to campus from on E. 15th St Disabled Accessible Parking Metered Spaces at the Main parking lot In the United States, reserved spaces are mandated by the Americans with Disabilities Act Accessibility Guidelines. Violators parked in these spaces without a valid disabled parking permit (specially marked license plate or a placard that hangs from the rear-view mirror) are punished. Disabled Accessible Parking Meter The minimum fee here on this lot is $250 dollars apparently.
