Brush High School Morning Announcements Tuesday, February 12, 2013 ALL SCHOOL Black History Month As part of Black History Month, we recognize Cleveland native Sharon Draper, a successful author and nationally recognized public-school teacher in Cincinnati. Draper won the National Teacher of the Year competition in 1997. She retired as a language-arts teacher with Cincinnati public schools in 2000. She spent most of her career teaching seventh- through 12thgraders. They became her audience when she started writing fiction. "I did it [writing] for them," she said in a telephone interview. "As a teacher of English language arts, I knew what they respond to and what they don't." Simon & Schuster, her publisher, identifies her as a New York Times best-selling author and in March will bring out "Panic," her 31st title. "I have lots and lots of honors," she said. "But most important are the letters I get from readers. I get hundreds of emails in a week." Her former students write, too. "The day I went on Facebook, I got 300 friends, and they were all my students," she said. Draper likes public education and said, "I got the best education in Cleveland Public Schools." The Movie “Bully” Any student who was invited to see the movie, Bully, must return their signed permission slip by this Thursday, February 14th. Slips can be given to Ms. Fine in the Language Arts Office, Brandon McGhee, or Morgan Mackay. Brush Anime-Manga Club meeting Wednesday after school in Room D208. Verbal abuse is anything that the abuser says or does that manipulates, controls your feelings or behavior, and/or causes you to be afraid. It includes: • Name-calling and put-downs • Yelling, swearing, and screaming • Intentionally embarrassing you in front of other people • Keeping you from seeing or talking with friends and family • Telling you what to do and what to wear • Using online communities or cell phones to control or humiliate you • Making you feel responsible for the abuse • Stalking • Threatening to kill or hurt you or themselves • Threatening to harm people or things you care about • Threats to expose your personal secrets or to start rumors Today’s fact of the day is: One in three teens experience some kind of abuse in their romantic relationships including verbal abuse.
