Work Placements for students studying on Tier 4 visas

Work Placement can be a maximum of 50% of the length of the course
We are responsible for the student throughout the period of their work placement and
must continue to comply with all sponsor duties during this time.
the work placement must be an integral and assessed part of the course of study
Work Placements can occur at any stage of the course and can take place throughout
the course
Work Placements can be for more than 10 or 20 hours a week
Responsibilities;
Attendance monitoring
Procedure to inform the International Office Visa & Compliance Advisor if student misses 10
consecutive contacts
Procedure to inform the International Office Visa & Compliance Advisor if the student changes from
one work placement to another

Issues raised & responses
Tier 4 Student undertaking work placement overseas
Tier 4 Sponsorship duties must be maintained whether student is in the UK or overseas
Tier 4 Student undertaking work placement overseas and in vacation time
If the sponsored student is undertaking work placement then it is not vacation time and full
sponsorship duties must be maintained
International Students on Student Visitor Visas
Students on this type of visa may not work, volunteer or undertake work placements. This will apply
to students on exchange programmes from non EU countries

Tier 4 students work placement from/ to date input into UKBA SMS
Weekly update from work placement provider of student’s attendance
Faculty report to International Office any weekly update with less than 50% attendance

Proposed Responsibilities
International Office indicate to faculty’s at each intake list of international students with visa status
Faculty’s communicate to International Office when International Student is embarking on work
placement (including name address of site and from/to dates)
Faculty’s track attendance
Faculty’s report missed attendance to International Office
International Office report International Student if and when 10 missed contacts at work placement
