Malissa Ruth McCumbeers, a daughter of Ira and Mary (Newberry) McCumbers,
was born April 16, 1887 in Braxton County WV and died about 1929 in Calhoun
County WV. She married Wiley B. Marks June 13, 1910 in Braxton County WV.
Wiley, a son of Smith and Nancy M. (Naylor) Marks, was born November 3, 1884,
and died April 23, 1980 in Calhoun County WV. Wiley and Malissa apparently
separated. Braxton County WV Marriage records record the marriage of 35 year old
Wiley B. Marks to 17 year old Alta Dobbins January 22, 1921. Clara Edith,
Malissa’s daughter, gave her surname at different times as Marks, McCumbers and
Truman. On her Social Security application, she listed her father as Floyd
Truman.
On September 17, 1930, in Webster County WV, Wiley Marks was convicted of
1st degree murder in the killing of Grover Leason. He was sentenced September
19, 1930, and entered the WV Penitnetiary in Moundsville, WV on September 28,
1930. His sentence was life without parole. On February 19, 1948, he was
transferred to WV Medium Security Prison.
He was apparently paroled later.

married and divorced before marrying Susanna.

Maxiune had a child before marriage. Danny Carmel McCumbers’ obituary in
the “Hur Herald.com” April 12, 2007, identified him as a son of Carmel Childers.

and Myrtle Maude (Young) Miller, was born in Braxton County WV March 9, 1928 and
died there August 4, 2009.
He ws a US Navy veteran of WWII, serving aboard the USS Barton (DD722.) He
served from August 31, 1943 until his honorable discharged March 9, 1946, wit
service in the European Theatre and the Pacific Theatres.
He was retired from the Department of Highways in Braxton County.
