AFRICA REGION.
REPORT ON PROGRAMMES AND ACTIVITIES FOR THE JUNE 2013 TO JUNE 2014 PERIOD.
PREAMBLE:
Africa Region is relatively underdeveloped. In spite of the numerous challenges facing the
Region however, some modest successes were recorded in the pursuit of our goals since the
inauguration of the current Executive in Prague 2013.
POLICY THRUST:
To make WONCA relevant to the delivery of universally assessable high quality health care in
Africa.
SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES:
1. Membership:
– To increase the number of Member Organisations/ Countries in WONCA.
- To increase the number of Direct/ Life Members in the Region.
- To support the growth of Afriwon.
2. Capacity Building:
- To promote and support the training of Family Physicians at all levels in the Region.
3. National/ Regional Priorities:
- T o work with WHO, National Governments and our Member Organisations to
identify and execute priority programmes/ projects aimed at improving health care delivery in
Africa.
The priority programme we focusing on in this triennium are:
(a) Universal Health Coverage based on Primary Care based Health Systems.
(b) Undergraduate training in Family Medicine.
(c) Postgraduate Vocational training in Family Medicine.
Our activities during the period were aimed at accomplishing these objectives.
In addition to this we have tried to streamline our operations to facilitate sustainable
development of the Region based on the following Committees:
A. Communications.
B. Committees/Working Parties/ SIGs.
C. Finance.
D. Conferences.
Summary of Programmes and Activities in the Region.
 Constitution of Regional executive in Prague 2015.
 Face to Face inaugural meeting of the Executive in Prague.
 Adoption of a 7-Point Agenda to guide Executive activities:
 -3 Core Programme Agenda – Membership; Capacity Building and National Priorities.
 4 Operational Agenda – Communication; Committees; Finance and Conferences.
 Launch of Afriwon Renaissance in Prague.

Bimonthly Regional Executive Teleconference meetings.
Maintenance of effective communication through an active Website, Face Book and
News Update by the Secretariat.
 Membership sensitization and mobilization.
 National Membership Organisation
 Existing and prospective.
 Direct Membership drive.
 Africa Regional President’s ( ARP) attendance of WICC Workshop in Johannesburg in
September 2013.
 Visit to the WHO Regional Representative in Nigeria and discussion of direction of future
collaboration.
 Preparation of Draft Proposal for WHO Regional Office collaboration with WONCA.
 Face to Face meetings with:
- Accra 2015 HOC in Accra, Ghana in September, 2013.
- Accra 2015 Chair in Ibadan, Nigeria in October 2013 and April 2014.
- the leadership of Member Organisations – South Africa.
- National Executive of AGPMPN in September 2013.
- the leadership of AGPMPN, Faculty (NPMCN)and SOFPON.
- Coordinators of prospective Member Organisations for Botswana, Sierra Leone,
Liberia and The Gambia.
 Attendance of London World Executive meeting in London, January 2014.
 Ongoing work with West Africa College of Physicians to start Residency Training in
Cameroon.
 Correspondence of Director of Residency training in Ethiopia.
 Support for the HURAPRIM project in Africa.
 Planned exhibition of Accra 2015 and Afriwon at Wonca Europe 2014 Conference in
Lisbon, Portugal .
 Afriwon members attendance of Lisbon 2014 Conference.
 Family Doctors Day celebration in Ghana, South Africa, Kenya and Nigeria. Nigeria
celebrated it in elaborate ways in four cities – Abuja, Lagos, Port Harcourt and Benin.
The theme was: Universal Health Coverage – The Role of Family Doctors.
 Ongoing work on proposal for Universal Health Coverage for Edo State.
 Engagement with National University Commission, NUC, along with SOFPON/Faculty
culminating in the publication of the Benchmark for Minimum Accreditation Standards
recommending the teaching of Family Medicine in all Medical Schools in Nigeria.
 ARP’s attendance and presentations at the Annual Conferences of SOFPON in
November, 2013 and AGPMPN in March 2014.
 Participation in World Executive Teleconference meetings.
 Attendance of the World Executive meeting and WONCA Europe Conference in Lisbon,
Portugal in July 2014.
