Mrs. Hansen Classroom News Schedule and Teaching Assignments We are half way through the first quarter and have spent time reflecting on how the 4th-6th grade rotations are working. Our conclusion is that the current schedule is not best for students. Starting Monday the 4th grade will be mostly self-contained except for specials. Mrs. Hansen will be teaching 5th and 6th grade reading, writing, and social studies. Ms. Brown will be teaching 5th and 6th grade math and science. Ms. Brown will also be teaching science to the primary classes. I am looking forward to this new schedule. Please let me know if you have any questions. Writing Fifth and Sixth grade students continue to work on personal narratives. The first narrative has been graded and students are now working on their second essay. This week students also reviewed writing expectations and their essays in order to set writing goals for their next project. If you would like to see your child’s completed essay it can be found in your child’s Google Classroom account. Fourth grade is continuing to work on their realistic fiction story. Our goal is to finish the stories this week. Social Studies Fourth and fifth grade have finished their relief maps of Alaska or North America. Fourth Grade is learning about Alaska Native cultures and fifth grade is learning about European explorers that made discoveries in the western hemisphere. Sixth grade has been learning about ancient civilization of the Fertile Crescent. September 16, 2015 Testing Students completed MAP testing this week. The test results will help to set goals for student learning. Fund Raising for Juneau Trip Even though I can’t set the travel dates yet for the 5th and 6th grade trip to Juneau (I am hoping for an end of February or beginning of March date), we are moving forward with fund raising. The current sixth grade class raised most of their funds last year so they will not need to sell raffle tickets or popcorn this year. However, all students will need to donate $40 towards the trip. The fifth grade class will also need to donate $40 towards the trip and also help with two fund raising activities. These activities are a raffle and selling popcorn. Fifth grade students will be receiving raffle tickets to sell next Friday, September 25. The raffle will be for a cord of firewood from the Stump Company. All fifth grade students are expected to sell at least two books (20 tickets). Selling popcorn on Fridays also helps us raise money for the trip. I need a parent volunteer to help supervise two students each Friday. The volunteer will need to help set up starting at around 2:45 PM and stay until 3:45 PM. Please let me know if you will be able to help the class with our popcorn sales. You can contact my through email at jhansen@hbsd.net or phone 766-6710.
