Director of ANCC Accreditation Program to
Highlight MNA Convention
Dr. Kathy Chappell, PhD, RN, Vice President of the Accreditation Program and Institute for Credentialing
Research at ANCC, will be in Montana during the first week of October, 2014! She will be participating in
the MNA Convention from Wednesday, October 1, through Friday, October 3. Her sessions were
described in last month’s newsletter. In addition to the learning experience, this is your opportunity to
meet, learn from, and share with the person who guides the entire nursing professional development
accreditation program. It’s a unique opportunity, and we encourage you to take advantage of it.
The theme of this year’s convention is “empowering nurses as key players on the healthcare team”.
Sessions will include best practices from a number of organizations around this theme. Registration is
currently available on the MNA web site (https://mtnurses.wufoo.com/forms/m1xmcve10n3vlvb/)
We look forward to seeing you there!

Change from Co-Provider to Joint Provider
Language
As we discussed at the May provider updates, ANCC is changing terminology for the learning activities
that two or more organizations plan and implement together. Historically, we have called these “coprovided” activities, and our colleagues in medicine have used the term “co-sponsored”. This has caused
a great deal of confusion. Effective immediately, you may begin using the new term “joint providers” to
acknowledge the groups who are working with you in designing and implementing a learning activity.
Modification on the term are acceptable: “jointly provided by…”, for example, would be fine. We have
changed the template on the MNA web site to reflect this change. Please look at your own agreement
templates, marketing materials, and any other places where you might need to make changes.
The change may be implemented right way, but must be implemented for all activities no later than
January 1, 2015.
Criteria for a jointly provided activity have not changed. The provider retains accountability for
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.
determining objectives and content
selecting planners, faculty, and others involved with the educational activity
awarding contact hours
recordkeeping procedures
evaluation methods
managing commercial support and/or sponsorship
In addition:
1. The provider unit’s nurse planner must guide the planning committee
2. A representative of the joint provider organization must be a member of the planning
committee
3. In advertising, the provider’s name must be prominent; joint providers may be listed as well
4. There must be a properly negotiated, signed, and dated agreement in the activity file
demonstrating adherence to the above criteria.
Please contact us if you have questions about this change.

Revision to Content Integrity Standards
The ANCC Content Integrity Standards for Industry Support in Continuing Nursing Educational Activities
has been revised to address the use of logos for commercial interest organizations in required disclosure
statements. The information below is provided by the Accreditation Program office:
Excerpt from the ANCC Content Integrity Standards that is revised (Section G, Item 8):
Content of the Educational Activity. Content is the responsibility of the Provider of the educational
activity. All materials used for the educational activity must be free from commercial bias. To guard
against the presence of commercial bias, the Provider is responsible for ensuring the following:
a. Slides, handouts or other materials presented to the learner related to the educational activity do not
display any logos or other trademarks of a Commercial Interest Organization;
b. Live (in-person) educational activities are presented without reference to a Commercial Interest
Organization, except for required disclosure; acknowledgement of commercial support is limited to the
name of the entity providing support
c. Enduring materials do not include logos, trademarks or other insignia of, or references to, a
Commercial Interest Organization, except for required disclosure; acknowledgement of commercial
support is limited to the name of the entity providing support
d. Web-based materials do not include logos, other trademarks or other insignia of, or reference to, a
Commercial Interest Organization, except for required disclosure; acknowledgement of commercial
support is limited to the name of the entity providing support
e. Evaluations of the educational activity make no reference to a Commercial Interest Organization or its
products or services; and
f. Learners are not recruited for any purpose during the activity or evaluation.
The bottom line: logos of commercial interest organization MAY NOT be used at any time for any reason
in relation to your continuing nursing education activities. This change does not apply to any marketing
or educational materials you currently have in print but will apply to any new materials produced after
September 1, 2014, and full compliance with the revised standards is required by January 1, 2015.
