9 Montana Nurses 1 Association Provider Newsletter: July, 2014 MEET THE DIRECTOR OF THE ANCC ACCREDITATION PROGRAM! Dr. Kathy Chappell, PhD, RN, Vice President of the Accreditation Program and Institute for Credentialing Research at ANCC, will be in Montana during the first week of October, 2014! Kathy will be meeting with the MNA Council on Continuing Education on the evening of Tuesday, September 30 and will give the featured presentation at the opening of the MNA Annual Convention on the morning of October 1. Her topic is “Interprofessional Education to Improve Interprofessional Collaborative Practice and Patient Outcomes”. Following that presentation, Kathy will facilitate a break-out session for people interested in further discussion on this topic. She will be available to talk with participants individually during a reception from 5-5:45 that evening. Kathy will be present throughout the convention, and will present a session on Friday morning entitled “Successfully Transitioning Registered Nurses and Advanced Practice Registered Nurses into Clinical Practice Settings”. Please plan to be with us for convention – the theme is “nurses as key players on the healthcare team”. You can increase your own knowledge and skills, network with colleagues, and meet the ANCC Accreditation Program director! We look forward to seeing you there! EXPIRATION DATE FOR YOUR PROVIDER UNIT Please be aware that your expiration date is the date your provider approval expires, not the date that the application is due. We send you a notice 6 months before your provider status is scheduled to expire. At that point, we ask that you submit the eligibility form and confirm your intent to reapply. We will then schedule a telephone call with your nurse planners to discuss the provider application and answer any questions you have about submitting your evidence. The application itself is due at least 3 months before your scheduled expiration date. That gives the approver unit’s peer reviewers ample time to review your materials, request and review any additional required information, and verify that all criteria are met. Montana Nurses Association is accredited as an approver of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation. 2 If your application is in the final review stages, we can extend your provider expiration date for that short interval pending receipt of final information. However, it is important to note that you may not award contact hours for any continuing education activities after your expiration date. Please mark your calendars to ensure timely receipt of your application materials. “Library” of Independent Studies Available from MNA A resource library of independent study activities has been established by MNA and is available at www.mtnurses.org. The library consists of a mix of written materials and taped webinars that learners may register for and access at their convenience. The list of resources will continue to grow over the next several months. There are two related opportunities for you: If you have learners who are looking for independent study resources, feel free to refer them to these activities. If you or one of your colleagues are interested in writing independent studies or taping a webinar for use in the MNA library, we would love to talk with you about how that can work. Let us know! Fall Webinar Series for Nurse Planners Again this fall, MNA will be partnering with the Ohio Nurses Association to present a series of webinars on the theme of “Documenting Evidence of Effectiveness in your Approved Provider Unit”. The sessions will be facilitated by Pam Dickerson, PhD, RN-BC, FAAN, Director of Continuing Education at MNA; Zandra Ohri, MA, MS, RN, Director of Continuing Education at ONA; and Terry Pope, Chair of the ONA Continuing Education Approver Council. Descriptions of the 4 sessions and registration information are attached to this newsletter.
