Reading: Students are focusing on reading independently with books at their independent reading level
building, building stamina as a reader. Students will be assessed in the next couple of weeks to see their
progress in reading and to form reading groups. Next week we will begin learning basic sight words.
Writing: Students are writing and sharing stories that they write in class, emphasizing that everyone is a
writer and writers find ideas for writing everywhere. In the next few weeks we will focus on planning
stories with a beginning, middle, and end. We will briefly review basic handwriting in the next few weeks,
emphasizing how to use lined paper and forming letters correctly.
Words Study: Students are being assessed to identify skills that will be taught in reading groups, as well as
whole class instruction.
Word of the week: sesquipedalian

Math:
Our math unit is on numbers and counting to 120.

Social Studies/Science:
We have been learning the school
expectations this week and getting to
know everyone’s name. The focus is on
being responsible, respectful and safe in
the halls, classroom, bathroom,
lunchroom, playground, and at
assemblies.
Science: We are waiting for the delivery
of Monarch caterpillars.

Important notes:
GYM IS ON TUESDAYS AND THURSDAYS. PLEASE BRING GYM SHOES ON THOSE DAYS.
Conferences will Tuesday evening, October 15th and Wednesday, October 16th. There are many openings left for
Wednesday morning, if you did not sign up for a conference yet. Please e-mail me or send a note of possible times
that work for you. I will send out reminders in October for those who sign up. If those dates do not work, I would
gladly meet with you before school or after school on another day.
We will be going on a field trip to the Minnesota Wildlife Refuge this fall. The date is unknown at this time.
Homework will go home in the Homework/Wednesday folders every week, unless noted in the newsletter.
Homework and the homework folders will need to be returned on Monday of the following week. Homework this
week is due on Tuesday, due to the holiday weekend.
