Tony Ince, MLA for Cole-Harbour-Portland Valley and Minister of Communities, Culture and Heritage and Minister of African Nova Scotian Affairs, helped celebrate the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. at StFX on Jan. 21, 2014. Tony Ince, StFX students and members of the executive of the Black Students Society, Samantha Brown and Quinlin Gilbert Waters (far right), and StFX Equity Advisor Marie Brunelle Fourth annual Dr. Agnes Calliste African Heritage Lecture Series Keynote speaker Lorraine Reddick Lorraine Reddick, the African Nova Scotian Student Support Worker with the Strait Regional School Board, presented the fourth annual lecture of The Dr. Agnes Calliste African Heritage Lecture Series at StFX on Feb. 10, 2014. Ms. Reddick delivered an address entitled “A Familiar Glimpse at the Past – Honouring a Mentor” .The lecture was sponsored by the StFX Department of Sociology, the offices of the Dean of Arts, Human Rights and Equity Advisor, and Academic Vice-President and Provost. A reception will follow. Poignant commemoration ceremony marks National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women Members of the StFX and local community came together to share their voices and to stand as catalysts for change during a National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence against Women commemoration ceremony held in the Gerald Schwartz School of Business Auditorium on Dec. 6, 2013. Johnston Chair in Black Canadian Studies at Dalhousie University, delivered the annual Dr. Agnes Calliste African Heritage Lecture Series The annual Dr. Agnes Calliste African Heritage Lecture Series was held at StFX in the Gerald Schwartz School of Business Auditorium on February 5, 2013. Dr. Afua Cooper, author, poet, and James R. Johnston Chair in Black Canadian Studies at Dalhousie University, presented the keynote address, “African Canadians and the War of 1812: Identity, Gender, and Citizenship.” The lecture and reception were sponsored by StFX’s Department of Sociology, and the offices of the Dean of Arts, the Academic Vice-President & Provost, Human Rights and Equity Advisor, and the Dean of Science. Powerful and inspiring speech marks StFX’s Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebrations Dr. Burnley "Rocky" Jones Dr. Burnley “Rocky” Jones, civil rights activist and lawyer from Halifax, NS, gave a powerful and inspiring speech to mark the Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebration held at StFX on Jan. 24, 2013. The event went very well, organizers said, and drew about 120 people including StFX students, staff, and faculty, and community members. Mr. Jones, an internationally known lawyer and political activist in the areas of human rights, race, education, social justice, and poverty, delivered a moving keynote address in the Schwartz School Auditorium. He spoke about similarities between Canadian leadership and the American Civil Rights movement in the ‘60s and about modern struggles in Nova Scotia. Augy Jones, the son of the speaker and the X-Women basketball head coach, also delivered a strong speech during the event, which celebrates Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy. The event was organized jointly by StFX’s Black Student Advisor’s office and the Human Rights and Equity office. StFX annually celebrates Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The day marks the birthday of Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. and is observed on the third Monday of January each year, which is around the time of Dr. King’s birthday, of January 15.
