Today’s development leaders and their organizations must be prepared to respond creatively to this dynamic context. Building on a long tradition of promoting active citizenship through its educational programs and global learning partners, the Coady International Institute’s approach to development is grounded in a commitment to “a full and abundant life for all” (M.M. Coady). Development is seen as a holistic process based on justice and equity, including equitable access to resources and benefits, and the right and responsibility to participate in society. The Coady International Institute’s new Diploma in Development Leadership provides a framework for equitable development based on a participatory, bottom up, holistic approach. Its overall purpose is to strengthen the knowledge and ability of development leaders to effectively facilitate societal learning and change at different levels of practice and influence. OBJECTIVES Specifically, the program aims to: Enhance knowledge of innovative practices, contemporary issues and trends in development at the micro and macro levels; Explore conceptual linkages between societal change, good governance, participation and social learning; Provide space for personal reflection on philosophies of development and transformative leadership; Strengthen capacity to manage development organizations, programs and projects in a sustainable and participatory manner; Strengthen capacity to plan, monitor and evaluate community-based development initiatives; Strengthen capacity to nurture a culture of peace and non-violence; Enhance practical skills in a broad range of participatory methodologies and tools for community capacity building, including asset mapping and facilitating adult learning; Develop capacity to act collectively through knowledge sharing, networking and multi-stakeholder processes to achieve greater impact at national and global levels; Develop practical competencies in self-directed research and learning; Engage participants in the generation and dissemination of new knowledge; Strengthen commitment to social justice. WHO SHOULD ATTEND? This innovative program is designed for experienced mid to senior level development leaders of civil society organizations and social movements, as well as private sector and government departments that work in partnership with communities, internationally or in Canada. Preferred candidates are leaders in local and international NGOs, co-operative networks and other community-based organizations, women’s groups, indigenous people’s organizations, faith-based organizations, and relevant government departments. The Diploma Program highlights innovative approaches to community-based development from around the world. All participants are required to take a combination of core courses, issue-based seminars, professional skill building sessions, and specializations. Specializations enable participants to deepen their learning and develop skills in particular aspects of development work. The Coady Institute offers five three-week specializations during the Diploma. The program is intended for civil society actors who are currently engaged in, or will contribute to the advocacy work of their organizations in future, internationally or in Canada. This innovative Certificate Program aims to provide women with the necessary knowledge, skills and motivation to strengthen and advance within their current commitments, be they at the organizational, community or national level. The program is designed for women who want to prepare themselves for a role in management and who have at least three years of experience in community-based development. To meet these new challenges, centres of learning that are committed to social transformation and people-centred development must enhance the capacity of adult educators and trainers of trainers to develop new participatory models of education and training that are based on local contexts and the educational needs, dreams, hopes and fears of their learners. This program is designed primarily for experienced adult educators and trainers who want to explore new theories, principles and practices in participatory adult education and training that would address the challenges they face in their local realities and contexts. OBJECTIVES As a result of this course, participants will be able to: Strengthen their existing knowledge of the theories, principles and practices of transformative adult education and participatory training; Recognize and demonstrate different curriculum design theories and practices with particular emphasis on participatory approaches; Enhance their capacity to design and facilitate adult learning using participatory design and facilitation techniques; Analyze issues and challenges they have experienced as adult educators and trainers of trainers with a view to identifying new ways to deal with such challenges; Identify local and international strategies for inter-agency collaboration and networking in participatory education and training.
