IDENTIFICATION AND COMMUNICATION OF LEGAL
REQUIREMENTS AFFECTING THE UNIVERSITY
I.
PURPOSE:
The following presents the procedure for identifying and having access to
the legal and other requirements which are directly applicable to the
aspects activities, products and services of the University. The procedure
has been developed in accordance with the requirements of ISO 14001 and
OH&S 18001.
II.
SCOPE
This procedure covers laws, regulations, and other requirements established
at the national and local level that apply to the health and safety hazards
and environmental aspects of the University’s activities, products, and
services.
III.
DEFINITIONS
Legal requirements: national and local regulations and laws.
Other requirements: mandatory or voluntary codes of conduct and
performance standards (e.g. Approved Codes of Practice) (either internally
or externally created) that the University has committed to.
IV.
RESPONSIBILITIES
a)
The Occupational Safety, Health and Environment Unit (OSHEU) is
responsible for identifying and maintaining a register of national and
local safety, health and environmental regulations and requirements
applicable to the University’s safety, health and environmental
obligations. Furthermore, it is the responsibility of OSHEU to
communicate any changes and additions to the register.
b)
Heads of School/ Directorates (or nominee) are responsible for
maintaining a list of legal and other requirements that are applicable
to the School/ Directorates’ significant health and safety hazards and
environmental aspects. The Heads of School/ Directorates are
responsible for ensuring that staff and students under their control
have knowledge of legal and other requirements associated with all of
the School/ Directorates’ significant health and safety hazards and
environmental aspects.
