Typhoon Fitow Disaster Response Report - 1st Report Central Emergency Operation Center Data as of 05.10.2013 21:00 I. Typhoon Summary (Source: Central Weather Bureau) The Central Weather Bureau issued the sea warning for medium typhoon Fitow at 23:30 on October 4, 2013, followed by the sea and land warning at 14:30 on October 5. At 20:00 on October 5, the typhoon was located at 25.1 degrees north latitude and 126.0 degrees east latitude. This placed the typhoon out at sea 450 km east of Taipei. The Category 4 storm has a storm radius of 250km and Category 5 storm has a storm radius of 80km The typhoon is moving at 19 km/h in the west-northwest direction. The latest update indicated that the typhoon center is out at sea east of Taipei and continuing to move in the west-northwest direction. The storm circle has now entered the waters off northern and eastern Taiwan, so poses a threat to all regions north of Hsinchu as well as Yilan. Keelung, New Taipei, Taipei, Taoyuan, Hsinchu and Yilan should all take extra precautions as well as prepare for strong winds and heavy rain. Shipping sailing or operating off Taiwan's north coast, northeast coast, southeast coast and in the northern part of the Taiwan Strait should take extra precautions. Long waves have appeared along Taiwan's northern and eastern coast as well as Mazu, Lyudao, Hengchun Peninsula and Dongsha Island. Northern Taiwan as well as the eastern coast have experienced strong gusts of wind and starting tomorrow (October 6), Force 8 to 9 gusts are expected along the southwestern coast as well so please stay alert. Spring tide is currently in effect so low-lying areas in northern Taiwan should take precautions against flooding and storm surge. Due to the effect of Typhoon Fitow, between tonight (October 5) and tomorrow night (October 6), Keelung's northern coast, the mountain areas north of Miaoli as well as the mountain areas of Yilan will experience torrential rain or extremely torrential rain. The mountain areas of Taichung and the mountain areas of Nantou may experience localized heavy rain or very heavy rain. The mountain areas in the north, northeast, east and south have a chance of experiencing heavy rain or extremely heavy rain. Please watch out for landslides, falling rocks, debris flows and flash floods. Low-lying regions should take precautions against flooding.
