Sport and Physical Activity is an important part of all our lives and keeping active is especially important as we get older. The Leicester-Shire & Rutland ‘Feel Alive from 65’ campaign week launches on 29th September 2015 and will be an amazing time to take part in a programme of physical activity across Leicestershire, Leicester and Rutland – www.lrsport.org/beactive As part of this fantastic campaign, Leicester-Shire & Rutland Sport (LRS) is pleased to announce the 4th Annual ‘Feel Alive from 65 Celebration’ where we recognise our active older generation. This prestigious event is being sponsored once again by imago and will take place on Thursday 29 th October 2015 at The Link Hotel, Loughborough. This is your chance to nominate, in a range of categories, those over the age of 65 who are participating in sport or physical activity – regardless of whether or not they are an elite athlete or simply enjoying the benefits of taking part. There is also the opportunity to recognise the many volunteers who make a tremendous contribution for the benefit of others. The nomination categories are: Athlete Award (Performance) Physical Activity Award (Participation) Volunteer Award Outstanding / Lifetime Achievement Award Exercise Referral/Healthy Heart/Get Healthy Get Into Sport Award Active Community Group Award As in previous years, considering all the nominations received, an award for the actual ‘Oldest Athlete’ will also be presented at the Celebration. The closing date for nominations is Monday 12th October 2015 and all nominees, along with their nominators, will be invited to attend the celebration event where the winners will be announced. Stanley Buteux, 78, who started long distance running at the age of 58 and this year, intends to run the Leicester Half Marathon to raise Kidney Donor awareness. David Flick, 72, who can be seen regularly officiating rugby games both midweek and on a Saturday and is respected throughout the rugby fraternity for being a player and referee for over 50 years. Colin Magee, 72, who has instructed sailors and driven forward the Leicestershire & Rutland Youth Sailing Association for the past 46 years, including ensuring that anyone can have fun on the water, including those with visual impairments and learning disabilities. Agnes Graham, 63, who despite having no vision at all attends the gym at Harborough Leisure Centre twice a week, as well as walking her guide dog, which in itself takes determination and courage. 'Women Today', aged between 45 and 79, who organise weekly physical activity sessions such as aerobics, rock wall climbing and Nordic walking, always followed by a cup of tea and a chat. In addition we awarded two to recognise Richard Mee (69) and David Medlock (72), for their contribution to volunteering across a range of sports and events including the 2012 Olympics and Paralympics and 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games. The overall award was presented to Harold Veazey (96) from Melton, who attends Waterfield Leisure Centre’s gym three times a week using the CV equipment and weights sections. On the evening, when Harold was asked if he found going to the gym hard, he said, "No, I enjoy every minute of it!" (All nominees must be aged 65 years or older) This award is for those athletes who are competing on a regular basis in line with a sports competition framework and affiliated to a club/league within Leicestershire, Leicester and Rutland. This award is aimed at those participants who participate in at least 150 minutes of physical activity a week. This category is open to those giving their time at least once a week, either coaching, officiating, instructing or volunteering within a club or group within Leicestershire, Leicester or Rutland. This nominee will have committed a considerable amount of time contributing to sport or physical activity, including personal achievements or supporting others to perform. This award is for those who have been participating in the above programmes and who have taken the steps towards an improved healthy lifestyle and is an inspiration to others. For groups who are meeting on a regular basis and who are benefitting from participating in sport and physical activity. This can be either competitively or recreationally to improve their health and wellbeing.
