Class: 7 th
Grade Science
Date: Monday January 27, 2014
Do Now: Finish the “examples” sections on the foldable from Friday. Self correct the homework worksheet from over the weekend
Aim/Objective
Identify the difference between a pure substance and a mixture in pairs while completing a data collection sheet
Recognize and describe physical properties of matter in pairs while completing a data collection sheet
Recognize and describe two chemical properties of matter (flammability and reactivity) in pairs while completing a data collection sheet
Agenda
Do Now: 10min
Investigation Stations 20min
-Each station will last for 5 minutes. Students will rotate clockwise around the room from station to station.
-Students will visit four stations and collect data. Students will record their findings on the data collection sheets provided to them
Station Name Description of Activity Materials Students starting at the station
Pure Substances vs
Mixtures
Students will record on their data sheet whether the item is a pure substance or a mixture.
Students will explain their selection in the third column
Physical Properties 6 different items, students will label the six items with the physical property the item represents
Students will record the property next to the item on their data sheets
Chemical vs
Physical Properties of Matter
Define chemical property, physical property, flammability, reactivity
Watch the video what is the difference between chemical and physical properties? Did you
Jar of shells, munchkins, sugar, salt, image of gold
Vocabulary labels: color, density, magnetism, malleability (flexibility), luster (shine), state, density
Items: water with red food coloring, magnet and paper clips, sheet of aluminum foil, ice cube, marble and cotton ball, gold earrings iPads: video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oF

Clean-up 5min
Students will clean up the workstations, all supplies will go on the counter by the sink, and students will return to the front of the room
Wrap-up 10min
Students will complete an exit ticket: What is a physical property, what are the two chemical properties, and describe the difference between a pure substance and a mixture
Students will be given the homework assignment: study for a quiz tomorrow
Curriculum Standards
PS 8 Differentiate between mixtures and pure substances

Homework
Quiz tomorrow: physical and chemical properties of matter & mixtures vs pure substances, use the weekend homework as a study guide
Read the section on states of matter and answer the reading questions.
Reflection
This was a successful lesson. Students were active and engaged in the lesson. Students were still confused with the idea of a “property” as something that describes matter.
Some had difficulty completing the data tables and felt rushed at the stations. In the future, I will use fewer stations and allow for more time for small group discussion. I would also split this lesson into two class periods. I would spend one day discussing physical properties and a different day discussing chemical properties.
