domestic language immersion experience pre-approved and determined in conjunction with the LAS Committee from the
following options: National Student Exchange, internship or volunteer work. The minimum time period for meeting the
residence/immersion requirement is six weeks. However, the Latin American Studies program recommends that students
spend at least one semester abroad.

Helpful hints

It is advisable to take SPAN/LAS 352 and SPAN/LAS 367 after completing the Language Immersion Requirement.

As SPAN/LAS 352 provides a cultural and historical basis for SPAN/LAS 367, students should consider taking
SPAN/LAS 352 before SPAN/LAS 367.

Depending on course load, students are advised to avoid taking SPAN/LAS 352 and SPAN/LAS 367 at the same time.

SPAN 491 (Special Topics) courses are LAS electives when their content directly relates to Latin America. Your
professor and the Foreign Languages office will complete a blanket waiver so that this class appears on your degree
audit.

Review your degree audit to verify that your courses appear where they should. For example, some courses fulfill GEs
as well as your major requirements, so you should look to see if these courses appear in both categories. If they do not,
you should schedule an appointment with your advisor.

If you complete your Language Immersion Requirement through a study abroad program, you should carefully review
