CLASS TITLE:
MATH LEARNING CENTER INSTRUCTIONAL
ASSISTANT I
BASIC FUNCTION:
Under the direction of the Math Learning Center (MLC) Director, participate in a wide variety of
specialized program and office duties; provide work direction to and monitor performance of MLC
temporary employees; assist in the operations of the MLC; provide specialized tutorial assistance
to MiraCosta College math students for on-ground, online and hybrid classes.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
1.
Perform MLC activities that maintain and increase district-wide retention goals. (E)
2.
Present student mathematics workshops and mathematics departmental workshops. (E)
3.
Train, provide work direction/guidance, and provide feedback to supervisor regarding the
work of MLC peer tutors; assist in ongoing in-service training to continuing employees. (E)
4.
Assist in development of instructional materials for the MLC for the approval of the
Director. (E)
5.
Assist students in individual and group settings in all mathematics courses offered at
MiraCosta College, including but not limited to pre-algebra, algebra, statistics, math for
elementary school teachers, trigonometry, calculus, discrete mathematics, differential
equations, and linear algebra. (E)
6.
Work with mathematics faculty to provide instructional support for their students. (E)
7.
Administer or oversee administration of tests at a variety of locations; oversee students
during test administration; transport test materials and assure that facilities are appropriate
and adequate; ensure test materials are ordered, received and returned to faculty or the
proper agencies in compliance with security procedures. (E)
8.
Assist in resolving intra-staff conflict; monitor and meet program goals and expectations
related to faculty, staff, and students; ensure student confidentiality.
9.
Maintain a clean and safe work environment.
10.
Perform related duties as assigned.

Mathematical and Statistical computations.
Graphing Calculators and Mathematical Instructional Software.
Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Equivalent to a High School Diploma. Additional college-level mathematics coursework in Calculus
II (or knowledge of Calculus II acquired through employment). One year of generally related work
experience. Preference may be given to those applicants who hold a tutor training certificate
through an organization such as the College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA).
LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Valid California driver license.
WORK DIRECTION, LEAD AND SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
May provide work direction to student workers.

PHYSICAL EFFORT:
Primarily sedentary with intermittent standing, walking, bending and stooping; occasional light
lifting and carrying of objects weighing 25 pounds or less; ability to work at computer, including
repetitive use of computer keyboard, mouse or other control devices; ability to travel to a variety
of locations on and off campus as needed to conduct district business.
EMOTIONAL EFFORT:
Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships involving interactions and
communications personally, by phone and in writing with a variety of individuals and/or groups
of individuals from diverse backgrounds on a regular, on-going basis; ability to concentrate on
detailed tasks for extended periods of time and/or intermittently while attending to other
responsibilities; ability to work effectively under pressure on multiple tasks concurrently while

meeting established deadlines and changing priorities.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Primarily works in an office and instructional lab environment. Subject to frequent interruptions
by individuals in person or by telephone; intermittent exposure to individuals acting in a
disagreeable fashion. May work at any district location or authorized facility during day, evening
and/or weekend hours. Occasional local travel may be requested.
