MIRACOSTA COLLEGE CLASS TITLE: MATH LEARNING CENTER SPECIALIST BASIC FUNCTION: Under the direction of the Math Learning Center (MLC) Director, coordinate, organize and participate in a wide variety of specialized program and office duties; serve as primary contact with MLC employees and provide work direction and guidance; provide information to the college and public concerning MLC services; maintain responsibility for the operations of the MLC in the absence of the Director; provide specialized secretarial support to operate the MLC. The MLC is designed to help students in any MiraCosta College mathematics class whether on-ground, online or hybrid. REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES: 1. Develop and coordinate a system of matching mathematics faculty with MLC employees to provide academic support based upon student needs; process mathematics faculty recommendations; identify and monitor specified faculty requests. (E) 2. Develop, assess, evaluate, and analyze MLC activities that maintain and increase districtwide retention goals. (E) 3. Assist in the preparation and delivery of presentations to faculty, administration and the community; develop and present student mathematics workshops; assist in creating and maintaining a departmental series of workshops. 4. Train and provide work direction/guidance to MLC employees and student peer tutors; develop ongoing in-service training to continuing employees. (E) 5. Assist in the development of materials and maintain MLC webpages and social media. (E) 6. Assist students in individual and group settings in all mathematics courses offered at MiraCosta College, including but not limited to pre-algebra, algebra, statistics, math for elementary school teachers, trigonometry, calculus, discrete mathematics, differential equations, and linear algebra. (E) 7. Work with mathematics faculty to provide instructional support for their students. (E) 8. Assist Director in monitoring delivery of academic support services at all district sites. Analyze, interpret, and apply district and departmental policies and procedures related to the MLC. Assist and support the development and maintenance of the MLC. Compose and prepare a variety of correspondence relating to the MLC and for a variety of audiences. Maintain employee records; organize and process student and faculty evaluations. Monitor MLC budget; process purchasing needs and requests. Assist in collection of staff and student time sheets and submit to payroll. Administer or oversee administration of tests at a variety of locations; oversee students during test administration; transport test materials and assure that facilities are appropriate and adequate; ensure test materials are ordered, received and returned to faculty or the proper agencies in compliance with security procedures. (E) 10. Create staffing schedule for MLC employees; analyze records and applications of employees; determine staffing requirements; assist in the hiring process of MLC employees. (E) 11. Compile and review data for research projects and reports related to district retention efforts, service usage, student progress, and budget trends; prepare and maintain records and reports; provide statistical information. (E) 12. Collect and compile data to assist the Math Learning Center Coordinator or Director in evaluating staffing levels and performance of staff. 13. Assist in resolving intra-staff conflict; monitor and meet program goals and expectations related to faculty, staff, and students; ensure student confidentiality. 14. Demonstrate sensitivity to and understanding of diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, ethnic and disability issues. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Equivalent to a High School Diploma. Additional college-level mathematics coursework in Calculus II, Calculus III, and either Linear Algebra or Differential Equations (or knowledge of the aforementioned course material acquired through employment). One year of closely related work experience. Preference may be given to those applicants who hold a tutor training certificate through an organization such as the College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA). LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Valid California driver license. WORK DIRECTION, LEAD AND SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Will provide work direction to Instructional Aides and student workers. CONTACTS: Students, faculty, staff, various departments, external education institutions, and the public PHYSICAL EFFORT: Primarily sedentary with intermittent standing, walking, bending and stooping; occasional light lifting and carrying of objects weighing 25 pounds or less; ability to work at computer, including repetitive use of computer keyboard, mouse or other control devices; ability to travel to a variety of locations on and off campus as needed to conduct district business. EMOTIONAL EFFORT: Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships involving interactions and communications personally, by phone and in writing with a variety of individuals and/or groups of individuals from diverse backgrounds on a regular, on-going basis; ability to concentrate on detailed tasks for extended periods of time and/or intermittently while attending to other responsibilities; ability to work effectively under pressure on multiple tasks concurrently while meeting established deadlines and changing priorities. WORKING CONDITIONS: Primarily works in an office and instructional lab environment. Subject to frequent interruptions by individuals in person or by telephone; intermittent exposure to individuals acting in a disagreeable fashion. May work at any district location or authorized facility during day, evening and/or weekend hours. Occasional local travel may be requested.
