Our target groups are women suffering from Obstetric Fistula and other childbirth injuries in
Ethiopia who we offer free treatment and care to as well as women of childbearing age in
Ethiopia who we provide services to in order to prevent obstetric fistula, maternal mortality and other child birth injuries.
Brief History
Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia was founded by Drs Catherine and Reginald Hamlin in 1974 when they opened the Addis Ababa Fistula Hospital. Since then we have grown across the country and today we have a total of 6 hospitals, a rehabilitation centre and the Hamlin College of midwives which trains highly qualified midwives who are deployed in rural health centres.

Our Main Activities
• Treatment of obstetric Fistula Patients and patients suffering from childbirth injuries across our 6 hospitals
Rehabilitation and Reintegration of Fistula Patients into
Training of Midwives to BSc Degree level at the Hamlin College of midwives
Deployment of midwives into rural health centres where we support them with a mentor, ambulance services, housing and essential drugs and supplies.

Hamlin College of Midwives
The College is located 20 KM from Addis Ababa. There is a staff service bus that brings staff from the city to the college every day.
Context: The Hamlin College of Midwives was established in 2007 in order to provide a high quality of education and training to Midwives and to deploy those midwives into rural health centres so that the mothers of Ethiopia can have access to high quality maternal care reducing maternal mortality and child birth Injuries including obstetric fistula.
The college provides students with an international standard BSc
Degree in midwifery. Students are selected from rural Ethiopia and come to Addis Ababa for the 4 year residential course. The course together with accommodation is completely free to all students who in turn make a commitment to go back and serve their local community.
Objectives
Updating the existing course curriculum to taking into account local and international developments in midwifery.
Developing new curriculum for additional courses including in service training courses and
BSc courses for Diploma holders
Developing teaching skills of the existing academic staff
Contribution to the Strategic Goals of HFE
Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia aspire to providing high quality training and education to our midwives so that they can develop exemplar levels of service provision in rural health centres. This exemplar model of service can then be replicated in other health centres across the country.
This can only be achieved by continuous improvement of the curriculum and carrying out gap analysis and needs assessments of the health professionals in the field. It also requires the continuous development and improvement of the teaching methodologies and mentoring support.
Duties and Responsibilities
Assess the existing level of academic staff and provide the needed support (in service training) according to the gaps identified.
Update/advise the academic staff with the new technologies and management protocols.
Serve as an academic advisor for the Dean's office.
Responsible for the upgrading midwifery program
Play a pivotal role in improving the quality of maternal care being provided at the health centres where Hamlin's midwives deployed.
Take a leading position in advocating research work among academic staff and support accordingly.
Work closely with the Vice Dean and quality assurance office and involve actively in internal institutional audit.

Other Staff Relationships
The main focus of the position is to capacitate and support the existing staff. The candidate must work very closely with the Vice Dean and the other academic staff to collaborate and support them in achieving their goals.

Ethiopia is a country with a rich and complex social and cultural history with over 85
Languages and many ethnic groups. The candidate should respect this culture at all times.
All teaching material and lectures are delivered in English.
Most informal communication in Hamlin is in Amharic however formal report writing is normally in English.
All of the volunteer’s colleagues will have good English and will be able to assist them when communicating with outside parties.
Whilst it would be a great advantage if the candidate could speak Amharic it is not essential.
The volunteer should be comfortable working in this culturally diverse environment and be interested in learning from others as well as passing on skills wherever possible.
