I have worked as a community health nurse for more than fourteen years in
rural settings in Ondo State,Nigeria before taking up an appointment as the
local Action AIDS manager to Akure North Local Governement,I am quite
exposed to terrible deaths amongst women.I love assisting women during
delivery especially in Nigeria where majority of women in rural areas die
from preventable deaths.
1 - Description
The enlightenment seminar comes as part of the collaborative efforts of O
& A Foundation and Ondo State Local government and Chieftancy affairs
The activity drew the attendance of both single trained and chief nursing
officers from the 18 LGAs of Ondo Srate including few from State Health
facilities The programme is designed to address a number of issues .and
concepts ancluding focused ante-natal care,partographs,basic and
comprehensive emergency obstetric neonatal care services ( signal
functions) obstetric fistula,emergency contraception and maternal morbidity
rate and ratio.Among the key facilitators are Mrs Adejuwon O & A )
Foundations,Mrs Smart,Mrs Osho ,Mrs Olasehinde etc The focus was
sharpened when A Global Call to Action on Strenghtening Nursing and
Midwifery powered by WOMEN DELIVER on MDGs 4,5,& 6 came up for
development.

voices from around the world to call for action against maternal death

2)FIGO-International Federation of Obstetrics and Gynaecoology-the only
organisation that brings together professional societies of Obstetrician and
gynaecology on a global basis.
Women are the economic heart of the world and they need to be healthy.
3 - Achievements
Women are the world's poorest people,any effort that is geared at
developing the nation has to include women and girls on its high priority list
The aim is to increase individual capacity e.g (a university degree )others
aim to increase individual team and organisational capacity thru
experimental programme based on action-learning principles.
Making more people aware of the roles of nurses and midwives will reduce
preventable causes related to pregnancy,childbirth,post-partum condition
and disabilities.When a woman dies her children are less likely to receive
nutritious food and education,saving women's lives and improving their
health are key to achieving all of the MDGs.
A copy of a draft plan on Strenghtening nursing and midwifery
competencies have been forwarded to the secretary to the federal
government,Nigeria for compliance.
4 - Sustainability
Strengthen legislative and regulatory frameworks to ensure midwives have
appropriate
standards of practice and are regulated to practice their full set of
competencies as defined by the WHO and the International Confederation
of Midwives (ICM). Also, ensure immediate notification of maternal deaths.
5 - Innovation
:education and training" On-line courses in the essential competencies for
basic midwifery practice. Build
institutional capacity, including strengthened clinical training, post-graduate
programs and research. Increase South-South collaboration to expand the
production of midwives with evidence-based quality training was also
recommended to enable reduction in maternal death.

Nurses and midwives can offer a valuable resource to national health
development especially in scaling up health system development in
achieving all the MDGs.
In addition to Resolution 54:12 a few WHA Resolution for Strenghtening
Nursing and Mudwifery workforce were adopted in the 1990s.They
recommended a greater involvement of nurses and midwives in policy
formulation,
6 - Replicability
reasons are:
first,nearly every health policy and programmes affects nurses and
midwives in some way given that the nursing and midwifery workforce
forms a substantial part of the health systems workforce
Nurses and midwives are in a close and continuos contact with
patients,families,and communities often have insightful and different views
compared with other category of health worker
7 - Contribution
Poverty and health are closely related,well trained primary health care and
public health nurse make a considerable difference to community's health
contribute directly and indirectly to poverty reduction as well as well trained
community midwife,including long term home based care,support care of
the elderly,and people living with HIV/Aids and other chronic ilnesses.Their
evaluation provide evidence for future evaluation
