Cross Cultural Awareness Skills (for Students Participating in an International Experience) 10 Credit Module - HSS1004 in Semester 1 OR HSS1005 in Semester 2 What is this module about? This module is all about you and the experience you’re having as a student in a new culture! This module is taught with the aim of helping students develop cross-cultural skills to help them succeed during their study abroad placement. Students will understand how cross-cultural issues are present in their daily lives, and challenge their own ideas surrounding culture and nationality. Overall, this module aims to help students have a great time in Newcastle by increasing understanding about culture and how it affects their lives. What will I learn? -What is culture? -Culture shock -Culture and identity -Language -Cross-cultural awareness -Nations: cultures or constructs? (x2) -Stereotyping -Cultural bias in the media -Your Culture and Britain How will I learn? This module is interactive—you and your experiences are the most important part! Every week we will have one two-hour lecture. You will also be expected to work with your classmates outside of class to broaden your cultural experiences and knowledge pool.
