Cross Cultural Awareness Skills
(for Students Participating in an International Experience)
10 Credit Module - HSS1004 in Semester 1 OR HSS1005 in Semester 2
What is this module about?
This module is all about you and the experience you’re having as a student in a new culture! This
module is taught with the aim of helping students develop cross-cultural skills to help them succeed
during their study abroad placement. Students will understand how cross-cultural issues are present
in their daily lives, and challenge their own ideas surrounding culture and nationality. Overall, this
module aims to help students have a great time in Newcastle by increasing understanding about
culture and how it affects their lives.

-Nations: cultures or constructs? (x2)
-Stereotyping
-Cultural bias in the media
-Your Culture and Britain
How will I learn?
This module is interactive—you and your experiences are the most important part! Every week we
will have one two-hour lecture. You will also be expected to work with your classmates outside of
class to broaden your cultural experiences and knowledge pool.
When is this lecture?
10.00am to 12noon on Thursdays:
Semester 1 (HSS1004): Weeks 5-14 inclusive (i.e. 2nd October to 4th December 2014) in Seminar
Room 1.71B, 1st Floor, King George VI Building
Semester 2 (HSS1005): Weeks 22-28 and 33-36 (i.e. 29th January to 12th March plus April 16th to 7th
May 2015) in BSTC.G.34 Teaching Room 2, Ground Floor Barbara Strang Teaching Centre
How is this module assessed?
This module is assessed in two parts:
-1 essay of 1,500 words
-1 portfolio that you will work on during the Semester

HSS1005 is a 10 credit module in Semester 2
This is the same module so students who are in Newcastle for both Semesters cannot take both
HSS1004 and HSS1005.
