CRIMINALIST II – Chemistry
This is technical and advanced professional level laboratory work in a specialized field relating to
crime analysis. Work involves the application of laboratory techniques and methods used in
various physical and chemical analyses of evidence obtained at crime scenes or elsewhere, and
the presentation of findings for investigative and prosecution purposes. This position also
conducts complex analyses that require the use of advanced laboratory equipment and
instrumentation. Work is performed in accordance with standardized laboratory methods and
controls to ensure accurate and verifiable analyses of specimens. Work is performed with
considerable independence under the general direction of a supervisor.
ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES OF WORK

Examines the following types of evidence: fire debris for the presence of ignitable liquids,
controlled substances and/or blood samples to identify and quantify alcohol content.

Operates complex laboratory equipment; uses advanced laboratory techniques; stays
current in the forensic field by reading, attending meetings and training.

Completes reports of results of analyses and communicates results to appropriate
department personnel.

Provides expert court testimony relating to results of analyses; photographs and prepares
graphic illustrations for court use; consults with and advises District Attorney and other
law enforcement officials in forensic matters.

Formulates independent conclusions; sets priorities; prepares reports.

Maintains safe conditions in the laboratory and conducts laboratory procedures in
accordance with ASCLD/LAB policies.

Performs related work as required.
REQUIREMENTS

Minimum of a BS degree in chemistry, physical science or a related field with a minimum
of 30 hours of chemistry from an accredited four-year college or university.

Possess a minimum of two years of experience in forensic chemistry; preferably in fire
debris/trace analysis. Proficiency in controlled substances desirable. The minimum
experience level should be at the Criminalist I level or higher, preferably in an
ASCLD/LAB accredited crime laboratory.

Ability to effectively testify in court as an expert witness.

Thorough knowledge of advanced laboratory techniques, materials, equipment and
instrument operation, including GC/MS, GC, and FTIR.

Thorough knowledge of the methods used in collecting and preserving physical evidence
and presentation of such evidence in court.

Ability to effectively communicate with representatives of other law enforcement agencies
and legal officials.
SALARY
Negotiable $56,000 to $65,000
