Lord of the Flies by William Golding Survival Manual The first main problem the boys have in the novel is that they are unprepared for survival on an uninhabited tropical island. They make many mistakes before they learn the best way to do things. Therefore, the more prepared people are, the better off they’ll be when having to survive in a hostile environment. Most experts suggest bringing a few things along to help when things get tough, but the main idea is to know and understand what to do when you have to survive on your own. This activity will ask you to find information and develop a survival manual that displays the results of your research. Imagine you are faced with a similar survival problem, for example, being stranded on a deserted tropical island with limited resources. What equipment should you have? What steps do you take? What should you avoid? You must have the following: a creative cover with clear titles, an eye-catching picture, your name a table of contents listing all the main concepts and topics at least three distinct sections illustrations of necessary items with descriptions of uses clear, brief paragraphs about each element of survival Step 1 Research- Gather information about the elements of survival. List supplies recommended having with you. Describe the steps you should take when being in these situations. Provide a list of things to avoid when in these situations. Note: You must write down the websites you use in proper format on the page provided. You cannot use somebody else’s information without giving them credit. Step 2 Rough Draft- Use the notes that you have gathered to start making the survival manual. The key is to find three to five main ideas for your manual. A basic manual would have chapters like supplies, steps, things to avoid, OR survival in the cold, survival in the forest, survival on the water, OR any other type of organizational topics. Step 3 Revise- Layout the pages of your manual. Be sure to have some sort of organization. Step 4 Final Copy- Type or write neatly a finished version. Get someone to read it to check for mistakes. Step 5 Representing- Present it to the class. You will be marked on how well you: present your information logically and clearly in your manual offer detailed and accurate information include examples and pictures to make it easier to understand complete your bibliography accurately orally presentation to the class
