ESL Lesson Plan Teacher: Taylor Cooper Day/Date: Monday, April 2, 2012 Grade Level & Subject: 1-2 Language Arts/Grammar Lesson and/or Unit Title: Action Verbs Amount of Time: One class period (50 minutes) Common Core Standard(s): #1 Language Arts #2 Communication #3 Writing Language Proficiency Level: Stage 3: The Speech Emergent Stage Student Learning Objective(s): 1. The learner will identify various action verbs in past, present and future tense. 2. The learner will participate in TPR activities to expand their knowledge of action verbs and their meanings. Assessments For Learning: Formative Assessment: Students will complete a finders sheet which will require them to communicate and interact with their peers as they look for someone who can demonstrate what each action verb on the sheet is. Summative Assessment: Students will complete an Action Verb Quiz in which they will have to be able to identify the action verb in each sentence. Lesson Outcome(s): The learner will have fun as they develop the skills necessary to identify action verbs and their meanings. Key/Essential Question: 1. What are action verbs? 2. How do action verbs change when the tense changes from present, to past, to future? Key Vocabulary- Action Verb, run, skip, walk, dance, etc. CALP activities - Finders sheet, Smart lesson, and charades Materials/Items Needed: Book; If You Were a Verb by Michael Dahl Smart Lesson Action Verb Quiz (one per person) Finders sheet (one per person) Hook/Engage: Read the book, If You Were a Verb to the class and then discuss the action verbs presented in the book and act out their meanings. Afterwards, have students each complete the finders sheet TPR activity. Each person must find a different peer to show them each of the action verbs. Lesson Activities: Activity 1: Finders Sheet Students will complete a finders sheet which will require them to communicate with their peers as they look for someone who can demonstrate what each action verb on the sheet is, You must find someone different for each verb listed. *Finders sheet word doc. posted on wiki Activity 2: Smartboard Lesson on Action Verbs During this activity, students will take turns coming up to the board and participating in the activities provided. The rest of the class will have to guess the verb. Activity 4: Action Verb Quiz Students will take turns looking at the vocabulary cards on the website and also playing the corresponding mini games. *Action Verb Quiz word doc. posted on wiki Real-Life Connection: Action verbs are a huge part of our everyday lives. We are constantly performing some kind of action whether it be sitting, walking, talking, or running the possibilities are endless! Any time we want to tell about an event we use action verb and also any time we want to tell about something that we are going to do in the future we use action verbs. Assignment Extension: After school, keep a log of all the actions you or your family members perform. For Example: Mom cooked supper. We ate supper I brushed my teeth. She fed the dog. List 10 sentences and underline the action verb in each one. Tomorrow at school, we will share some things from our lists. Differentiation Notes: Students who work at a slower pace will be given extra time to complete activities. A variety of activities will be available. Students who would rather not do the extension activity at home for whatever reason may complete it during recess. Modifications for special education students with IEPs and other students with exceptional needs will be discussed with the mentoring teacher.
