Warren Feld has been beading and making jewelry over the past 27 years, from bead
stringing, bead weaving, and micro-macrame to wire working and silversmithing. In 2000,
Warren founded The Center for Beadwork & Jewelry Arts (CBJA), an educational program for Be
Dazzled Beads in Nashville, TN. The program, and its instructors, approach education from the
Design Perspective – a teaching focus on how to make functional, material, and aesthetic
choices.
Warren’s commitment and concern for the "teaching of beadwork" resulted from watching and
talking, over the years, with customers in the bead shop, who had taken classes elsewhere, or
tried to teach themselves from books. These beaders were not buying parts or using parts to
their best advantage. It was obvious that many people had taken classes, but that they weren't
necessarily learning. They were memorizing steps, rather than integrating organized processes
of thinking, thus designing.
In 2008, Warren’s “Canyon Sunrise” necklace was selected as Finalist, 4th Place, in
SWAROVSKI’s Be Naturally Inspired Design Contest. His piece "Little Tapestries/Ghindia" — was
juried into the book SHOWCASE 500 BEADED JEWELRY, Lark Publications. 2012. He is working
to bring the CBJA curriculum online as LearnToBead.net. He is currently writing a jewelry
design series entitled “How To Bead A Rogue Elephant.” Warren’s ideas about “unity in
design” summarized in the chapter "The Ugly Necklace Contest," in The Beader's Guide To
Jewelry Design, Margie Deeb, 2014. His project "Gwynian Ropes Bracelet", in the international
beadweaving magazine Perlen Posie, No. 21, 2014.
