ASTE599 Solution Term Project 250 points Report Due 5/4/2014 Presentation Last day of Class (30 min) Problem Statement: Design an EDL mission to land or descend to the surface on a planet with an atmosphere and gravity (ex. Earth, Venus, Titan, Saturn, and Jupiter). 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. Describe the level 1 science and/or mission requirements. Describe the level 2 entry system requirements. Describe EDL architecture (eg. ballistic versus lifting, hyperbolic entry versus from orbit) Define how you will test and analyze the system prior to launch. Define the entry conditions including entry velocity and flight path angle. Define and size the subsystems on the entry vehicle. a. Define the size of the aeroshell and the geometry. b. Heat shield – select/size TPS based off of peak heating and total integrated heat load c. Structure – select material based off of peak deceleration load, and determine mass d. Parachute (if needed) – select type, size, peak load, terminal velocity, and mass e. Propulsion (if needed) – select engine, determine fuel needed, and determine mass f. Landing attenuation (if needed) – select method, peak load, and mass g. Select telecommunications approach, integration into the entry system, power needed, and create a link budget during entry and during surface operations (if needed). h. Payload – determine mass, data rate, and other considerations such as thermal limits and peak load 7. Plot velocity versus altitude indicating the different EDL mission phases. 8. Plot downrange versus altitude. 9. Plot heat rate versus altitude. 10. Calculation peak deceleration an altitude of peak deceleration. 11. Calculate peak heat load and altitude of peak heating. 12. Calculation total integrated heat load. 13. Provide MEL of the entry system including estimates for all subsystems. 14. Provide PEL of the entry system including estimates for all subsystems. 15. Comment on any unique environments or constraints the entry system and payload must be designed to accommodate (ex. water, acid, thermal, people, food).
