Set up another ClNIHa+HCl reaction this time used a 100mg
Transferred into microwave tube
Ultrasound it for 20 min until solution was almost soluable
Microwaved it at 150C
Finally, ran a HPLC
HPLC showed completed reaction- placed the tube into the fridge

Changed the pH of the reaction to about 5 using sodium carbonate
Extracted the compound using ethyl acetate and water about three times
Filtered using magnesium sulfate
Rotavapored until compound was dry

Used DMF to inject some of the dry sample from yesterday into the manual HPLC
Connected the peaks
There were two peaks
Rotavapored the first peak and the second peak
First peak was the compound
Second peak was the incomplete reaction (have to set up the reaction from step one using this
sample.)
Friday 11/19/10 My mentor let me stay at school and get help after school because I was getting behind
in some of my classes
This week’s experiments were repeats. I had to run reactions with smaller number of starting material
first and see how the reaction completes and see if the product forms. When I found out that this
reaction was successful, I had to run it again and again with a larger amount of starting material. I feel
like because I had to run with a large amount of material the reaction did not complete fully under the
same conditions as the smaller amount of starting material. This week was very busy for me at school. I
had to complete IB internals for the IB exam in May and I had so many tests to study for. I feel like I
never I had time to stop. I was either at school, work, or at home doing homework. I even had to
complete applications for college. I used to think that senior year was going to be pretty relaxing but it is
turning out to be not as easy as I thought it was going to be. Even when I am at work I feel like I am
always thinking about what homework I have or what I have to complete. Everyone in the lab always
tells me that they wish that they could be doing something as cool as I am with the internship when they
were in high school. This makes me feel proud of myself for achieving this internship.
