CODE OF CONDUCT
The Princess Elizabeth School Community is committed to providing a positive learning and
working environment for all members in accordance with the Provincial Policy 703. We believe
that all students and staff have the right to feel safe in and around their school. Classroom
procedures will be discussed with students at the beginning of the year. In order to maintain a
safe environment for everyone, Princess Elizabeth School has adopted a three-tier discipline
program. The tiers are structured as follows:
3 TIER BEHAVIOUR PROGRAM
Tier One
Tier 1 behaviours are those which primarily impact the student’s own learning
and/or that of others. These may include, but are not limited to: not being
prepared for class; not following directions; disrespect for others; or not adhering
to ‘Community Responsibilities’. Consequences may include, but are not limited
to: detention; time out; contact home; or community service. Student receives
verbal notification from a teacher that he/she has had a Tier 1 infraction for
unacceptable behavior. The student is made aware of consequences / future
actions should the misbehavior continue. Documentation is kept in the student’s
class file.
Tier Two
Tier 2 behaviours are those which interfere with the educational environment; put
others at risk or harm; may require administrator involvement; or are chronic Tier
1 behaviours. These may include, but are not limited to: inappropriate language;
cheating; intimidation; intent to harm others; or property damage. Consequences
may include, but are not limited to: loss of privilege; warning letter of suspension;
restitution; referral to in school support (Guidance, SST, administration, etc.) or
community service. Parent receives written notification from a teacher / team that
their child has had a Tier 2 infraction for unacceptable behavior. The student is
made aware of consequences / future actions should the misbehavior continue.
Documentation is kept in the student’s class file.
Tier Three
Tier 3 behaviours are those which require administrator involvement; violate
District / Provincial Policies; violate Provincial / Federal laws; or are chronic Tier
2 behaviours. These may include, but are not limited to: physical assault; theft;
vandalism; drugs / weapons; or harassment. Consequences may include, but are
not limited to: suspension; community service; loss of privilege; referral to District
Office; or referral to outside agency (police; SD; etc.). Parent receives written
notification from an administrator that their child has had a Tier 3 infraction for
unacceptable behavior. Parent and child may be required to attend a meeting
prior to the student being readmitted to school. Documentation is kept in the
student’s class file.
ATTENDANCE / TARDINESS
In accordance with the Education Act, students are required to attend school regularly. A written
excuse must be presented to the teacher upon the student’s return to school. Students are
expected to arrive at school on time prepared to begin work. All students arriving late must obtain
a late slip from their subject teacher and present it to their homeroom teacher. Letters will be
sent home for students who do not attend school regularly and / or are frequently tardy. Students
will be subject to consequences in accordance with the 3 Tier Program. Excessive tardiness /
absence may be referred to the Department of Social Development in accordance with provincial
policies.
LUNCHROOM RULES
Reasonable effort will be made to accommodate requests from parents of students who need to
stay for lunch. Parents are responsible for providing a lunch for their child (see Hot Lunch options
on the school website). Staying for lunch at school remains a privilege and students are expected
to behave in an appropriate manner and adhere to the School Community Responsibilities (see
previous page).
Consequences for students who do not to follow the rules are as follows:

COUNSELING SERVICES
All staff members are prepared to provide advice or assistance and students should not hesitate
to seek help when it is required. Our part-time guidance counselors are also available to provide
assistance if there are difficulties with program, studies, classmates, etc. Students can arrange to
see the guidance counselor by getting a referral through their homeroom teacher.
EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
The staff at Princess Elizabeth School encourages you to participate actively in extracurricular
activities. Our school provides an excellent opportunity for all students to get involved in a wide
range of activities. The goals are:


To encourage athletic involvement by the supporting of / or participating on school
teams and / or our intramural program.
To encourage involvement in community activities, social events and special
activities, and by sponsoring clubs and other special groups within the school.
If you find an activity missing, find other students with a common interest and a teacher sponsor
and get a club started.
Dances at Princess Elizabeth School may be attended by our middle school students and
approved guests. Guests are the responsibility of the student signing them in.
PROGRESS REPORTS AND PROMOTION
Progress reports will be issued three times during the school year. Parent-teacher conferences
will be scheduled twice during the academic year (see page 3). The subject teacher will send
course outlines home at the beginning of the year. Parents may contact their child’s teacher at
any time throughout the year to discuss his/her progress.
DRESS REGULATIONS & VALUABLE ITEMS
P.E.S. requires all students to meet acceptable standards of dress and grooming. Our guidelines
include neat, clean, modest and appropriate clothing (e.g. pajama pants are not appropriate for
school). Shirts must be able to be ‘tucked in’ and must cover a student’s back, front and
shoulders. Clothing may not include profanity or inappropriate content (incl. ‘gang’ themed items).
Shorts / skirts must be at least arm’s length. For safety reasons students are not to wear long
pocket chains, studded chokers / bracelets, or shoes with wheels. An individual’s appearance
should not offend or pose a safety hazard to themselves or others. Jackets, hats, bandanas and
book bags are to be kept in student lockers / classroom closets. High value items such MP3
players, PSPs, cameras, cell phones, skateboards, etc. are not permitted in the classroom and
for security reasons should be kept at home. Such items may be confiscated by teachers in
accordance with the School District’s policy on the ‘Use of Electronic Devices’.
EMERGENCY ALARMS & LOCK DOWN PROCEDURES
Whenever a fire alarm or emergency evacuation alarm sounds all students and staff must leave
the building via the nearest exit. Directions are given to all children on the first day of school, and
practiced throughout the year. Students are not to touch the alarm box or safety related items
(e.g. fire extinguishers) unless there is an emergency; to do so is a criminal offence. “Lock
Downs”, both external and internal will also be practiced throughout the year. Procedures will be
reviewed with all students prior to the practice.
SUPPLIES, TEXTBOOKS
Each subject teacher will provide you with a list of supplies and equipment you will need. Lists are
also available at the office. Students are expected to bring all necessary materials (texts,
notebooks, and pen / pencil) to each class. Issued textbooks become the student’s responsibility.
If a book is destroyed, damaged or lost, parents / guardians will be assessed the replacement
cost of the book as per NB Education Act E-1.12 (25).
LOCKERS
Middle school students (and some upper elementary classes) will be assigned a locker. All
lockers (and desks) remain the property of the school and as such are subject to search without
notice by school administration. Only combination locks may be used and students must
provide their teacher with the combination.
WASHROOMS
Students must obtain written permission from their subject teacher and be signed in and out of
class. Students are encouraged to use the washroom outside of class time so as not to disrupt
the learning environment. Agenda hall passes will be used for middle school students.
TELEPHONE
The phone in the office is available to students on an emergency basis only. Students must
obtain permission from their homeroom teacher prior to seeking permission from the office. Other
calls may be placed using the payphone on the main floor outside the hours of instruction.
TRANSFERS / CHANGE OF ADDRESS (CONTACT INFORMATION)
As soon as you know you are going to move from our school or your contact information has
changed, please inform your homeroom teacher and the office. In the case of a transfer please
return all school property to your homeroom teacher prior to leaving.
CUSTODIAL STAFF
The custodial staff is responsible for maintaining the school in good order. These duties can best
be fulfilled if the custodians have the cooperation of all students and staff. In addition, we believe
all staff and students must assist in keeping our school grounds clean and free of dangerous
materials. Take pride in your school – Don’t litter or deface your school!
STUDENT DROP OFF / PARKING
The student drop off area and parent parking is located at the back of the school. In order to
ensure student safety in the front of the building, drop off and parking are not permitted in this
area.
STUDENT FEE
The fee structure is as follows: $10 for elementary and $20 for middle (includes the cost of
agenda and locks). A flat ‘family fee’ of $30 (K-8) will be charged for families with two or more
students. The fee will replace any school wide fundraising (e.g. catalogue sales) and will cover
most fieldtrips / assemblies that we would normally ask students to pay for / offset. It does not
include charity fundraising (e.g. Terry Fox, Jump Rope for Heart, etc.) or extra or co-curricular
activities such as Schools on Skis, School Trip (Grade 8), FI / IF Cultural Fee ($12); etc.
