I’ve been asked this evening to give a short talk on Medieval
F o l k e s t o n e , p r o vi d i n g a r e v i e w o f t h e h i s t o r y a n d d e v e l o p me n t
o f t h e t o wn a n d p o r t f r o m t h e e a r l y me d i e v a l p e r i o d t h r o u g h t o
t h e c l o s e o f t h e M i d d l e Ag e s , t h a t i s f r o m t h e s e v e n t h t h r o u g h

The reference to Folcanstan in 700 occurs in a charter from
Wh i t r e d , k i n g o f K e n t c o n f i r mi n g t h e p r i v i l e g e s o f t h e K e n t i s h
c h u r c h e s a n d mo n a s t e r i e s a n d o n w h i c h t h e a b b e s s o f
Folkestone appears as a signatory. From an early date there has
b e e n a n a s s o c i a t i o n o f Ea n s w yt h e w i t h F o l k e s t o n e . T h e e a r l i e s t
r e f e r e n c e f o r t h i s o c c u r s i n t h e mi d e l e v e n t h c e n t u r y K e n t i s h
R o ya l Le g e n d , p a r t o f t h e c o mp i l a t i o n s ma k i n g u p t h e Li f e o f
S t M i l d r e t h , wh i c h r e c o r d s t h a t Ea s n w yt h e wa s t h e d a u g h t e r o f
Eadbald, king of Kent and that he founded a nunnery for her at

N e v e r t h e l e s s t h e a s s o c i a t i o n o f E a n s w yt h e wi t h F o lk e s t o n e c a n
b e a c c e p t e d . Th e r e i s n o f o u n d a t io n c h a r t e r f o r t he mo n a s t e r y
at Folkestone and it could in fact have been established at any
t i me d u r i n g h e r l i f e a n d p r o b a b l y t h e n d a t e s f r o m t h e s e c o n d
h a l f o f t h e s e v e n t h c e n t u r y , s o me t i me a f t e r 6 5 0 . Eve n s o i t c a n

A s we h a v e s e e n , b y 7 0 0 F o l k e s t on e wa s d e s c r i b e d a s a
m o n a s t e r i u m . Th e r e i s n o e v i d e n c e f o r t h e mo n a s t e r y d u r i n g
t h e e i g h t h c e n t u r y, b u t i t s e e ms l i k e l y t h a t t h e c o mmu n i t y o f
clerks settled at Folkestone developed independently of the
mo n a s t i c b o d y s o t h a t b y t h e e a r l y n i n t h c e n t u r y i t w a s w e l l
e s t a b l i s h e d , b e i n g e n d o we d wi t h p r o p e r t y o f i t s o w n . I n t h e
will of the reeve Abba dated 833/839 the sum of 50 pence
s e v e r a l l y wa s b e q u e a t h e d t o t h e c o mmu n i t y a t F o lk e s t o n e
s u g g e s t i n g s e c u l a r i t y. Th e wi l l a l s o d i r e c t e d t h a t A b b a wa s t o

exists for the fate of Folkestone, it is perhaps reasonable to

Confessor, also concerns the granting of land at Folkestone and

The late tenth and eleventh centuries also saw changes in the
g r o wt h o f t h e n umb e r o f p a r i s h c h u r c h e s , d e r i v i n g t h e i r i n c o me
f r o m p r i v a t e e n d o w me n t s a n d f r o m t h e v a r i o u s d u e s wh o s e
p a yme n t wa s e n f o r c e d b y l a w s u c h a s p l o u g h - a r ms [ 1 3 t h d a y
a f t e r t h e As c e n s io n ] , t i t h e , c h u r c h - s c o t [ S t M a r t i n 1 1
N o v e mb e r ] a n d b u r i a l f e e s . Th e g r o wt h wa s a s l o w a n d g r a d u a l
process and due largely to private benefactions so that by the
e l e v e n t h c e n t u r y a c o n s i d e r a b l e n u mb e r s t i l l r e ma i n e d i n

Wh a t e v e r t h e o u tc o me o f t h e s e e v e n t s , F o l k e s t o n e a p p e a r s t o
h a v e we a t h e r e d t h e Da n i s h a t t a c k s , s u r v i v i n g a s a c e n t r e o f
e c c l e s i a s t i c a l l i f e , b u t p e r h a p s wi t h i t s e n d o w me n t d i m i n i s h e d
and the parochia altered and shrunken into the form listed in
t h e Do me s d a y M o n a c h o r u m . M o r e o v e r , t h e l a t e S a x o n c h a r t e r s
o f C n u t a n d Ed wa r d t h e C o n f e s s or c l e a r l y i n d i c a t e t h e
c o n t i n u e d p r e s e n c e o f t h e c h u r c h a t F o l k e s t o n e f o l l o wi n g t h e
D a n i s h r a i d s o f t h e mi d t o l a t e t e n t h c e n t u r y. Wh a t f o r m t h i s
t o o k , a p a r t f r o m t h e d e v e l o p me n t o f p r o p r i e t a r y c hu r c h e s a s
centres of parochial life, is difficult to assess and it is
u n c e r t a i n wh e t h e r F o l k e s t o n e r e m a i n e d a s a mo n a s t i c
c o m mu n i t y i n t h e t e n t h a n d e l e v e n t h c e n t u r i e s . At b e s t t h e
c h a r t e r s e mp h a s i z e t h e c l o s e l i n ks b y t h e n e s t a b l i s h e d wi t h
C a n t e r b u r y a n d i t i s p r o b a b l e t h a t C h r i s t C h u r c h e n jo ye d t h e
revenues from Folkestone during the l ate Saxon period.
H a v i n g c h a r t e d t h e f o u n d a t i o n a n d d e v e l o p me n t o f t h e
mo n a s t i c c o m mu n i t y a n d c h u r c h w h a t d o we k n o w o f t h e
r e ma i n d e r o f F o l k e s t o n e d u r i n g t h e An g l o - S a x o n p e r i o d ? Th e
a n s we r i s v e r y l it t l e . F o r t h e l a t e s i x t h a n d e a r l y s e v e n t h
c e n t u r y we h a v e t h e e v i d e n c e o f a s ma l l s a mp l e o f t h e l o c a l
p o p u l a t i o n f r o m a g r o u p o f i n h u ma t i o n b u r i a l s f o un d o n Do v e r
Hill. A total of 49 graves were excavated there between 1889
a n d 1 9 1 0 . Ar r a n g e d i n r o ws t h e y f o r me d t h e s o u t h - w e s t e r n
s e c t i o n o f wh a t mu s t h a v e b e e n a n e x t e n s i v e c e me t e r y t h a t
e x t e n d e d a c r o s s t h e s o u t h e r n s l o p e o f t h e Do wn s . O t h e r b u r i a l s
are recorded as having been found in 1819 and further finds
w e r e ma d e i n t h e 1 8 4 0 s a n d 1 8 5 0 s, b u t t h e o r i g i n a l e x t e n t ,
l a yo u t a n d s i z e a n d p e r i o d s o f u s e o f t h e c e m e t e r y h a s n o t b e e n
e s t a b l i s h e d . F i n ds a c c o mp a n yi n g t h e b u r i a l s , wh i c h w e r e

a n a r e a o f e s t a b l i s h e d b u r i a l . Th e d a t e s o f t h e b u r ia l s f r o m t h e
l a t e s i x t h t h r o u g h t o t h e mi d s e v e n t h c e n t u r y s p a n t h e
C o n v e r s i o n P e r i od a n d r e p r e s e n t t h e f i n a l p h a s e o f n o n Christian burial. Thereafter burial probably occurred in closer
a s s o c i a t i o n wi t h t h e mo n a s t e r y a n d c h u r c h e s a t F o l k e s t o n e a n d
the other chapels and churches in the district .
T h e r e i s n o e v i d e n c e s u r v i v i n g o f t h e f o r m a n d l a yo u t o f t h e
e a r l y mo n a s t e r y a t F o l k e s t o n e . I t c a n b e a s s u me d t o h a v e
c o mp r i s e d a s ma l l s i n g l e - c e l l c h u r c h , p e r h a p s wi t h a n a p s e a t
t h e e a s t e r n e n d w i t h s i d e c h a p e l s a d d e d l a t e r , a l o n g wi t h a
r a n g e o f d o me s t i c b u i l d i n g s . I t h a s a l s o b e e n a s s u me d t h a t i t
w a s s i t e d o n t h e We s t C l i f f i n t h e a r e a o f wh a t l a t e r b e c a me
k n o wn a s t h e B a yl e a n d t h e t o p o gr a p h y, a n i s o l a t e d h e a d l a n d
overlooking the sea, suggests this was a n ideal location to site
a n e a r l y mo n a s t i c c o m mu n i t y. Th e r e i s a l s o t h e e v i d e n c e o f t h e
presence of later churches on the headland , and it was also the
a r e a c h o s e n f o r t h e f o u n d a t i o n o f t h e l a t e r me d i e v a l p r i o r y.

s e r i e s o f i n t e r - c u t t i n g r e f u s e p i t s , s o me b a c k f i l l e d i n t h e mi d l a t e S a x o n p e r i o d d u r i n g t h e n i n th a n d t e n t h c e n t u r y, o t h e r s

p i t c o n t a i n e d a c l a y mo u l d u s e d f o r t h e p r o d u c t i o n o f s ma l l

to the eight to ninth century and is clear evidence for
me t a l wo r k i n g . Th e s e r e f u s e p i t s w o u l d h a v e b e e n l o c a t e d t o t h e
rear of properties, buildings that would have fronted onto the
B a yl e . Th e p i t s a l s o p r o d u c e d r e s i d u a l s h e r d s o f p o t t e r y t h a t
c a n b e d a t e d a s e a r l y a s t h e s e v e n t h c e n t u r y, t h e f i r s t t a n g i b l e
ma t e r i a l e v i d e n c e f o r o c c u p a t i o n o n t h i s h e a d l a n d d u r i n g t h i s
p e r i o d . Ot h e r e xc a v a t i o n s e l s e wh e r e o n t h e B a yl e h a v e a l s o
p r o d u c e d q u a n t i ti e s o f l a t e S a x o n p o t t e r y , i n c l u d i n g d u r i n g t h e
investigations on the edge of the cliff in 1981 .

no later than 1125. From this date this fortified place probably
b e c a me t h e s e i g ni o r i a l r e s i d e n c e o f t h e Lo r d o f F o l k e s t o n e . F o r

a n n u m. A l a t e r i n q u i s i t i o n o f 1 2 7 1 p r o v i d e s f u r t h e r i n f o r ma t i o n
r e f e r r i n g s p e c i f i c a l l y t o t h e q u a r r y a t F o l k e s t o n e i n wh i c h mi l l
s t o n e s a n d h a n d mi l l s t o n e s a r e du g . La t e r l e a s e s o f t h e mi d
seventeenth century refer to the quarry ing of stone along the

for his engines from the quarry of Folkestone, during the
p e r i o d o f t h e wa r s wi t h F r a n c e . I n 1 3 5 6 a f u r t h e r o r d e r w e n t

those stones for warlike engines which had been prepared at

Despite the decline in influ ence of the Cinque Ports,
F o l k e s t o n e , a s a me mb e r t h e C o n f e d e r a t i o n c o n t i nu e d t o t r y
a n d e x e r c i s e t h e r i g h t s t h i s c o n v e ye d , b u t s e e mi n g l y t o l i t t l e
e f f e c t . I n 1 4 1 3 t h e t h e n M a yo r o f F o l k e s t o n e , Th o ma s R a b y,
w a s a r r e s t e d a n d c o m mi t t e d t o t h e p r i s o n a t F l e t e f o r r e f u s i n g a
w r i t o f t h e k i n g o n t h e g r o u n d t h a t h e w a s wi t h i n t h e l i b e r t y o f
the Cinque Ports.
F i n a l l y, b r i n g i n g t h e s t o r y f u l l c i r c l e , me n t i o n s h o u l d b e ma d e
o f t h e f i n d o f a n e a r l y c r e ma t i o n b u r i a l d i s c o v e r e d i n a b o u t
1850 during excavations for the foundations of new buildings
o n t h e B a yl e . Th e b u r i a l c o n s i s t e d o f f r a g me n t s o f a p o t t e r y
v e s s e l , a s s u me d t o b e t h e b u r i a l u r n a n d p r o b a b l y b r o k e n b y
w o r k me n , wi t h bu r n t b o n e s t o g e t h e r wi t h a l a r g e i r o n s p e a r
h e a d o r s wo r d f r a g me n t . Th e f i n ds h a v e n o t b e e n p r e s e r v e d , b u t
t h e p o t t e r y wa s e x h i b i t e d t o t h e S o c i e t y o f An t i q u a r i e s i n
L o n d o n a n d a c c e p t e d , a n d o n t h i s b a s i s t h e c r e ma t i o n i s
p r o b a b l y f i f t h o r s i x t h c e n t u r y i n d a t e , a l t h o u g h i ts a s s o c i a t i o n
w i t h a n i r o n s p e a r h e a d o r p a r t o f a s wo r d p o i n t s t o mo r e t h a n
o n e b u r i a l o f d i f f e r i n g d a t e s h a v i n g b e e n f o u n d . Th i s i s t h e
o n l y e v i d e n c e f o r t h i s p e r i o d f r o m F o l k e s t o n e . Th e r e i s s o me
l a t e f o u r t h c e n t u r y i mp o r t e d Ge r ma n i c p o t t e r y f r om t h e
e x c a v a t i o n s o f t h e R o ma n v i l l a o n t h e Ea s t C l i f f i n 1 9 2 4 a n d

o f t h e b a t h h o u s e s u g g e s t i n g s o me f o r m o f l a t e / p o s t R o ma n u s e
and occupation of the site. Clearly there is need to locate
archaeological sites that could be investigated to fill out the
s t o r y a b o u t t h e oc c u p a t i o n o f t h e F o l k e s t o n e a r e a f r o m t h e l a t e
R o ma n p e r i o d t h r o u g h t o t h e s i x t h c e n t u r y. B u t t h i s p r o je c t i s
e n t i t l e d F o l k e s t o n e a t o wn u n e a r t h e d b e f o r e 1 5 0 0 , a n d f o r t h e
p r e s e n t t h e s t o r y b e g i n s wi t h t h e f o u n d a t i o n o f t h e mo n a s t e r y
a n d t h e f i r s t u s e o f t h e p l a c e n a me Fo l c a n s t a n i n t h e s e v e n t h
c e n t u r y.
