UMASS HISTORY DEPARTMENT AWARDS AND SCHOLARSHIPS, 2015
The RICHARD W. BAUER SCHOLARSHIP is given to outstanding History majors
who will be doing internships during the summer.

The PAUL GIGUERE SCHOLARSHIP honors the memory of Paul Giguere.
To be eligible for consideration, students must be enrolled full-time and have completed a
minimum of one semester; have a minimum GPA of 2.75; have served or are currently
serving in the military; and demonstrate financial need as determined by the UMass
Financial Aid Services office. Ideally, candidates should show an interest in pursuing a
career in teaching or writing. Deadline: Monday March 2, 2015.

The DAVID H. MACDONNELL SCHOLARSHIP
Awarded to a rising junior who has declared a History major with a preference for a
student specializing in Irish or British History. If there are no strong nominees who meet
those criteria, the scholarship may also be awarded to a major focusing on American
History, especially one with an interest in British or Irish connections. 3.0 GPA
minimum. Scholarship may be renewed for senior year if recipient maintains 3.0 GPA.
Deadline: Monday March 2, 2015.

The UMASS OXFORD SUMMER SEMINAR SCHOLARSHIPS
Multiple scholarships are available for History majors who are accepted to the UMass

The POTASH TRAVEL GRANT FOR LATIN AMERICA, SPAIN, OR
PORTUGAL
The Department of History and the Latin American Studies Program offers $500 to be
awarded on a competitive basis to two University of Massachusetts students, graduate or
undergraduate, who plan to engage in research or pursue a course of study at an
established university in Spain, Portugal, or any Latin American country. Application
procedures will be announced in late February or March. Deadline: Wednesday, April 1,
2015.
The LOUIS GREENBAUM HISTORY WRITING PRIZE
The prize recognizes outstanding papers written for history courses. All topics are
eligible, and essays by majors and non-majors may be entered. There are two divisions: a
class-essay division for papers of 8 to 12 pages, and a term-paper division for longer
research papers.
Papers are nominated by faculty, but students who believe that their work is particularly
strong are encouraged to ask their instructors if their papers might qualify.
The HISTORY DEPARTMENT OPPORTUNITY AWARD
Established by Prof. Emeritus Ron Story, this is awarded to History majors who have
made a particularly outstanding contribution to the department’s undergraduate program.
The SIMON & SATENIG ERMONIAN SCHOLARS
Krikor Ermonian, Class of 1952 School of Engineering, and enthusiastic History buff,
established this award in honor of his parents. The Ermonian Scholars are selected by a
faculty committee, based on their history courses and overall GPA, the number of honors
courses they took, and the difficulty of their courses within history.
The ROBERT H. MCNEAL SCHOLARSHIP
This is named after the late Professor Robert McNeal, a former colleague who served as
chair in the history department in the early 1970s. The scholarship is awarded annually to
the graduating senior History major(s) with the highest overall GPA after having taken at
least 100 graded credits at the University.
The HAROLD W. CARY PRIZE
This is named after Professor Harold W. Cary. It is awarded annually to the graduating
senior History major(s) with the highest GPA in History courses.
The HOWARD H. QUINT PRIZE
This honors Howard Quint, a former chair of the History Department, who played a key
role in the establishment of the university’s honors program, now Commonwealth
College. Students from all majors are eligible to compete for this prize; seniors are
judged on the basis of writing nominated by their professors.

History majors are often also great candidates for other scholarships and prizes, which
may be awarded at the college or university level or through other campus entities, like
Commonwealth Honors College, Dubois Library, the Alumni Association, etc, as well as
national and international awards. If you have received an award that’s not listed above,
please let us know! Similarly, if you are wondering if your work or record might be a
good fit for another scholarship or other recognition—please ask; we don’t know
everything relevant that you’re doing unless you tell us! Contact

*UMass 21st Century Leader Award recognizing outstanding leadership in
graduating seniors.
* The CHFA Senior Leaderships Award awarded to seniors within the College
of Humanities and Fine Arts.
* UMass Rising Researcher Student Achievement Award sponsored by the
Vice Chancellors for University Relations and Research and Engagement. It recognizes
exceptional students who excel in research, scholarship, or creative activity.
* William F. Field Alumni Scholars for juniors for academic achievement and
connected skills or contributions
* FLURA (Friends of the Library Undergraduate Research Award), sponsored by
Special Collections and University Archives.
* The Writing Program Best Text Contest
