Additional actions

If on an upper floor level:

Go to the nearest designated safe “Refuge” in a fire escape stairway (ask your escort or colleagues to assist with opening fire doors along the route),

Use the refuge intercom to communicate your location to the Security

Gatehouse. If there is no intercom, use your mobile phone to call Security

(024765) 22222 ,

In addition ask a fellow student or colleague to inform the Security Officer at the Building Fire Panel of your location (normally adjacent to main entrance),

Wait in the refuge with your escort until the fire alarm is silenced and you receive confirmation from the Security Officer that it is safe to return,

If evacuation is confirmed because there is a real fire, a Security Service

Officer will be sent to your refuge. They may choose to evacuate you or simply move you horizontally to a safe area of the building.

If judge to be necessary you will be transfered to the evacuation chair and you will be taken down the stairs, out of the building to the designated assembly point.

Your wheelchair or other mobility aids will be recovered from the Refuge, when the Building is declared safe to enter.

1. If you require special assistance to transfer or have other restrictions on your transfer you will require an individual assessment and a
