This FOA stems from the NIMH Research Domain Criteria (RDoC) project that is intended to further a long-range goal of contributing to diagnostic systems as informed by research on genetics, neuroscience, and behavior. Deadline: October 22 NIH Director’s Transformative Research Awards (R01) http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/rfa-files/RFA-RM-12-017.html The NIH Director’s Transformative Research Awards complements NIH’s traditional, investigatorinitiated grant programs by supporting individual scientists or groups of scientists proposing groundbreaking, exceptionally innovative, original and/or unconventional research with the potential to create new scientific paradigms, establish entirely new and improved clinical approaches, or develop transformative technologies. Projects must clearly demonstrate the potential to produce a major impact in a broad area of biomedical or behavioral research. Deadline: September 21 NIH Research on Psychopathology in Intellectual Disabilities (R01) http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/pa-files/PA-12-219.html The purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcement issued by the National Institute of Mental Health is to invite grant applications for research designed to elucidate the epidemiology, etiology, treatment, and prevention of mental disorders, including emotional and behavioral problems, in persons of any age with intellectual disabilities. Deadline: October 5 NIH Juvenile Protective Factors and Their Effects on Aging (R01) http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/pa-files/PAR-12-218.html The purpose of this FOA is to invite both descriptive studies to identify putative juvenile protective factors, experimental studies to test hypotheses about their effects on aging, and translational studies to explore the potential risks and benefits of maintaining or modulating the level of juvenile protective factors in adult life. Deadline: August 29 NASA Leading Edge Aeronautics Research for NASA (LEARN) http://nspires.nasaprs.com/external/solicitations/summary.do?method=init&solId={ 5F7ADDFE-6117-C0EB-114E-F8D8697CF933}&path=open The call is intended to support the early-stage advancement of new processes, novel concepts, or innovative technologies that have the potential to meet national aeronautics needs, to mature into the current ARMD research programs, or to enable new avenues of aeronautics research that are not currently supported by ARMD Program and Project funds. Deadline: July 18 DARPA Maximum Mobility and Manipulation (M3), Actuation http://www.grants.gov/search/search.do?mode=VIEW&oppId=181534 DARPA is soliciting research proposals in the area of actuation. The Maximum Mobility and Manipulation (M3) program is designed to create and demonstrate significant advances in both science and engineering for ground robots. Deadline: August 21 USDA-NIFA Critical Agricultural Materials http://www.nifa.usda.gov/funding/rfas/cam.html In FY 2012, the Critical Agricultural Materials Program will support the development and field demonstration of new paint, coating, and adhesive products that are both agriculture-based and environmentally preferable. The objective of this program is to help product developers demonstrate functional performance and life-cycle environmental and economic performance against conventional products and applicable industry, military, and eco-labeling standards. Deadline: August 3 NEH/DFG Bilateral Digital Humanities Program http://www.neh.gov/grants/odh/nehdfgbilateral-digital-humanities-program The National Endowment for the Humanities in the United States and the German Research Foundation (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft e.V., DFG) are working together to offer support for projects that contribute to developing and implementing digital infrastructures and services for humanities research. Deadline: September 27 Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research Target Validation program https://www.michaeljfox.org/research/grant-detail.php?id=1 The Target Validation program supports work seeking to determine if manipulating a novel biological target has impact in a Parkinson’s disease (PD)-relevant animal model—an essential early step to the development of potentially promising therapies. Pre-proposal due: September 26; Full proposal invitations will be made in December Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation Fellowship Award http://www.damonrunyon.org/for_scientists/more/fellowship_award_overview The Foundation encourages all theoretical and experimental research relevant to the study of cancer and the search for cancer causes, mechanisms, therapies and prevention. Deadline August 15 Camille & Henry Dreyfus Foundation Senior Scientist Mentor Program http://dreyfus.org/awards/senior_scientist_mentor.shtml This program supports emeritus faculty who maintain active research programs with undergraduates in the chemical sciences. The Senior Scientist Mentor Program provides an award for undergraduate stipends and modest research support. Deadline: September 10 Limited Submissions: If interested in a Limited Submission Proposal please contact Kristin Sarver at research@purduecal.edu. Limited Submission: Burroughs Wellcome Fund Career Awards for Medical Scientists http://www.bwfund.org/pages/188/Career-Awards-for-Medical-Scientists/ These awards are for physician-scientists to bridge advanced postdoctoral/fellowship training and the early years of faculty service. Proposals must be in the area of basic biomedical, disease-oriented, or translational research. Candidates must hold an M.D., D.D.S., or D.V.M. degree. An Eligibility quiz is available online to see if potential applicants are eligible. Purdue may nominate five faculty members. Internal Deadline: Contact ovprlimited@purdue.edu by August 6 Sponsor Deadline: October 1 Limited Submission: NSF Critical Zone Observatories (CZO) http://www.nsf.gov/pubs/2012/nsf12575/nsf12575.htm?WT.mc_id=USNSF_25&WT.mc_ev=clic k This program seeks to establish a networked set of Critical Zone Observatories (CZOs) that will address pressing interdisciplinary scientific questions concerning geological, physical, chemical, and biological processes and their couplings that govern critical zone system dynamics. The CZOs are expected, collectively, to: 1) measure and quantify the significant processes of the critical zone on appropriate time and space scales; 2) develop a unifying theoretical framework that integrates new understanding of coupled hydrological, geochemical, geomorphological, sedimentological and biological processes; and 3) develop, couple and validate system-level models to predict how the critical zone responds to external forces such as anthropogenic, climatic, and/or tectonic processes. Each observatory must contribute to strengthening the scientific basis for decision-making, particularly with regards to impacts on health, safety, and environment due to observed and predicted changes in the critical zone. For this competition, Purdue may submit one proposal as lead institution. Internal deadlines are as follows: Monday, July 16: Letters of Intent due to the OVPR. Monday, August 6: Preproposals due to the OVPR. Monday August 13: Preproposal rankings due to the OVPR. Agency deadline is February 13, 2013.
