AFOSR is seeking unclassified, fundamental research proposals that do not contain proprietary information. The focus of this research project is to develop the mechanistic understanding of catalytic processes that activate small inorganic compounds (e.g., nitrogen, oxygen, hydrogen, sulfur, silicon, boron, aluminum, phosphorus, carbon and their oxides and hydrides) to do synthetically useful chemistry between themselves and with carbon sources. Catalytic homogeneous processes that lead to products under mild reaction conditions (low temperature and pressure) are preferred. The long-term goal of Graduate Research Diversity Supplements (GRDS) is to increase the number of persons from underrepresented groups in advanced academic and professional careers. NSF 11-013 URL: http://www.nsf.gov/pubs/2011/ nsf11013/nsf11013.jsp Deadline: 1/20/2011 45-5 CHE-DMR-DMS Solar Energy Initiative (SOLAR) (NSF) The purpose of the CHE-DMR-DMS Solar Energy Initiative is to support interdisciplinary efforts by groups of researchers to address the scientific challenges of highly efficient harvesting, conversion, and storage of solar energy. Groups must include three or more co-Principal Investigators, of whom one must be a researcher in chemistry, a second in materials, and a third in mathematical sciences, in areas supported by the Division of Chemistry, Materials Research, and Mathematical Sciences, respectively. The intent is to encourage new collaborations in which the mathematical sciences are linked in a synergistic way with the chemical and materials sciences to develop novel, potentially transformative approaches in an area of much activity but largely incremental advances. Successful proposals will offer potentially transformative projects, new concepts, and interdisciplinary education through research involvement based on the integrated expertise and synergy from the three disciplinary communities. NSF 10-613 URL: http://www.nsf.gov/pubs/2010/ nsf10613/nsf10613.htm Deadline: 1/25/2011 45-6 Industry/University Cooperative Research Centers (NSF) The Industry/University Cooperative Research Centers (I/UCRC) program develops long-term partnerships among industry, academe, and government. The centers are catalyzed by a small investment from the National Science Foundation (NSF) and are primarily supported by industry center members, with NSF taking a supporting role in the development and evolution of the center. Each center is established to conduct research that is of interest to both the industry members and the center faculty. An I/UCRC contributes to the Nation’s research infrastructure base and enhances the intellectual capacity of the engineering and science workforce through the integration of research and education. As appropriate, an I/ UCRC uses international collaboration to advance these groups within the global context. For further information, call 785-532-5045 KANSAS STATE UNIVERSITY to support: 1) Bridging Grants, 2) Institutional Core Facilities, 3) Partnerships for Translational Research Training, and 4) Postdoctoral awards. The purpose of this research support is to further the ability of Kansas researchers to complete successfully for NIH funds. A Bridging Grant provides interim support to help a project in Cell and Development Biology continue for an eligible investigator who has submitted a grant to NIH that was approved on the basis of scientific merit, but fell short of the funding range (applications with a score of 4.5 or higher will be triaged). These funds should assist in providing data needed to resubmit a revised application to NIH. Core Facility awards are for the purpose of providing funds to institutional core facilities that support the research focus of the KINBRE, Cell and Developmental Biology. Partnership awards are one-year awards offered for the purpose of facilitating the initiation of clinical/basic science research projects directed toward a translational goal. Post-doctoral awards are one-year mentored awards offered for the purpose of facilitating applications to support 1) initiation of post-doctoral research projects and 2) transition for the post-doctoral position to early investigator status. Email: hchapman@kumc.edu Deadline: 2/1/2011 45-8 K-INBRE Recruitment/Start-Up Packages (KU/KINBRE) Recruitment/Start-up packages are for the purpose of assisting in the process of bringing in new faculty to K-INBRE Partner Institutions. Awards for new tenure track faculty are to be proposed by department/division chairs, deans or research administrators of UPI. A preliminary proposal documenting the establishment of a search for a researcher in Cell and Developmental Biology may be submitted for consideration. Preference will be given to applicants with a recruit ready to sign. Investigators in all areas of cell and developmental biology including reproduction and embryonic development, organogenesis, developmental neuroscience, and cellular and developmental pathologies are eligible to receive these funds. There are no restrictions on the number of proposals that may be submitted per institution or within a category. An emerging technology is defined as one that has passed the initial developmental stage, but has not yet been evaluated within the context of its intended use. Projects proposed in response to this FOA should have the potential to produce a major impact in a broad area of cancerrelevant research. This FOA solicits R21 applications that have high potential impact and allows for an element of technical risk; preliminary data are not required. This FOA runs in parallel with another FOA of identical scientific scope, RFA-CA-10-004, that solicits applications under the NIH Application R33 grant mechanism.
