artworks in the classroom to support Literacy teaching and learning
Artemis and Leeds Art Gallery are working in partnership to offer special selection events for
teachers where you can choose artwork from Artemis’s and Leeds Art Gallery’s lending collections
to work with in your school.
Our next School Selection Event is at Leeds Art Gallery on the Monday 27th April 2015.
2.30pm – 3.30pm: ‘A Picture Paints a Thousand Words’ – Free CPD for teachers.
Paintings and other artwork are a readily accessible resource that can be used as a visual stimulus
for writing. This exciting one hour workshop delivered by Patsy Lyttle will help you to develop new
approaches to teaching Literacy using a selection of pictures from Artemis and Leeds Art Gallery.
This is a hands-on session and will support different aspects of the Literacy curriculum including
using original artworks as a stimulus for the creation of narrative, characters, dialogue and storymaking, encouraging children to explore ideas and develop the content of their writing.
3.30pm – 5pm: Picture Selection Event
Browse the selection of pictures available to borrow, at your leisure! There will be lots of new
pictures to choose from. You may borrow as many as you feel is appropriate (most teachers borrow
two or three) until the next picture lending event in April, when you can select some new ones.
As part of the Artemis service, there is no charge for Leeds local authority schools.
For information about borrowing artefacts or large batches of art, please contact the Artemis office
directly.

If you are interested in participating in either the training or the picture selection event (or both!),
please complete and return the booking form to Patsy Lyttle patsy.lyttle@leeds.gov.uk to reserve
your place. (It is essential you book in advance and places will be reserved on a first come, first
served basis.)
