ORGANIC CHEMISTRY (CRD: 4,0; HOURS: 48,00)
Organic compounds are the basis for living organisms. This course will describe structures, physicalchemical properties and reactivity of the main classes of organic compounds, with particular
emphasis for those important for environment, food and nutrition.
Knowledge of the chemical structure and reactivity of organic compounds. Use of fundamental
techniques for identification, separation and purification of organic compounds.
The organic compounds: structure, isomerism, compact formula, functional groups. Intermolecular
bonds in the organic compounds and their relationship with chemical-physical properties: volatility,
solubility, etc.
Alkanes and cycloalkanes, alkenes. Aromatic compounds: some derivative of benzene, polycycles and
heterocyclic aromatic compounds. Nomenclature and structure of aromatic compounds.
Alkyl halides: structure, reactivity, properties and ecological problems. Alcohols. Phenols.
Antioxidants. Organsulphuric compounds: thiols and disulphuric derivatives. Aldehydes and ketones.
Carbohydrates: monosaccharides, disaccharides and polysaccharides: properties and importance in
biological system.
Carboxylic acids and derivatives. Esterifications and hydrolysis of esters and amides. Lipids: fatty
acids, triglycerides, phospholipids. Soaps and tensioactives. Amines. Aminoacids and peptide bonds.
Peptides and proteins. Organic compounds in food. Organic compounds in crop protection.
Practical activities: extraction and analysis of organic compounds from plants and simple food
matrixes.
2 - Procedure for submitting the application

3 - Requirements
The position requires both:
 university training in a relevant discipline;
 solid experience evidenced by publications.
4 - Obligations
The lecturer appointed by the University of Makeni has the following obligations:

Hold at the Faculty of Agriculture, at Makeni, during the semester foreseen, the lectures/practical
activities indicated in the Degree Syllabus for the course entrusted to him/her; the possibility that the
teachings are carried out in part or totally through computerized systems is not excluded;

Establish appropriate forms of contact with the students during the lecture period as well as for the
entire duration of the lectureship;

Hold examination sessions.
5 - Duration of the lectureship
The duration of the lectureship is one academic year, starting from the official assignment of the UniMAK
Academic Body, with the possibility of renewal. To each course four credits are assigned that are equivalent
to 48 hours of teaching activity distributed across an overall period of approximately 15 days.
6 - Selection procedure

The Scientific Committee, on the basis of the CVs gathered by the Director of Human Resources of the
University of Makeni, selects the lecturer informing the administrative offices of UniMAK about the
outcome in order for them to provide for the formalization of the assignment.
