FARM STRUCTURES (CRD: 4,0; HOURS: 48,00)
The course aims to teach students adequate tools to apply the design criteria of rural buildings. The
course considers both functional requirements deriving from the farm production scheme, and
planning options on farm management. The course also aims to give students a basic knowledge to
survey a building site and to understand the basic concepts of mechanic and materials properties for
building design.
Planning elements for rural structures with special reference to structure for livestock farms.
Knowledge on environmental requirements of livestock and criteria for the definition of functional
spaces for animals and for the carrying out of related operations. Surveying a building site and
knowledge of the principles to select building materials.
Relation of rural structures and farm organization. Design criteria to locate rural buildings in the
landscape. Functionality of buildings in relation to farm organization. General criteria for the design
of structures intended for production. Functional aspects of structures for livestock farms. Sizing of
rural structures in relation to farm demands. Placement of rural structures in the farm.
Geospatial techniques applicable to survey a building site. Practical use of simple survey techniques.
Building materials (earth, wood, concrete, stones, natural fibers).
Design criteria of rural buildings in relation to animal requirements and to the environmental and
landscape impact. Minimum requirements to guarantee animal welfare conditions. Rural structures
in relation to surroundings: the problems related to environmental impact of agricultural activities.
. Control of ambient parameters in rural buildings. Functional requirements and layout organization
in livestock buildings. Structures for cattle and dairy farms. Structures for pig breeding. Structure for
poultry farms. Elements on design of other building for the farm (goat, sheeps, rabbit).

3 - Requirements
The position requires both:
 university training in a relevant discipline;
 solid experience evidenced by publications.
4 - Obligations
The lecturer appointed by the University of Makeni has the following obligations:

Hold at the Faculty of Agriculture, at Makeni, during the semester foreseen, the lectures/practical
activities indicated in the Degree Syllabus for the course entrusted to him/her; the possibility that the
teachings are carried out in part or totally through computerized systems is not excluded;

Establish appropriate forms of contact with the students during the lecture period as well as for the
entire duration of the lectureship;

Hold examination sessions.
5 - Duration of the lectureship
The duration of the lectureship is one academic year, starting from the official assignment of the UniMAK
Academic Body, with the possibility of renewal. To each course four credits are assigned that are equivalent
to 48 hours of teaching activity distributed across an overall period of approximately 15 days.
6 - Selection procedure

The Scientific Committee, on the basis of the CVs gathered by the Director of Human Resources of the
University of Makeni, selects the lecturer informing the administrative offices of UniMAK about the
outcome in order for them to provide for the formalization of the assignment.
