Veterans Tribute Career & Technical Academy 2014-2015 Course Expectations Course: Health Instructor: Chase Billington Contact information: 799-4710, ext. 3218 clbillington@interact.ccsd.net Course Scope and Goals: This course examines the intricate relationships between the structural and physiological functions required for the mental, physical, social, and emotional wellness. Topics include decisionmaking, wellness, nutrition and physical activity, body systems, substance use and abuse, communicable and non-communicable diseases, violence prevention, safety, and consumer health. Sex education and sexually transmitted infectious disease education, within established guidelines, is an integral part of this course. Instructional practices incorporate integration of diversity awareness including appreciation of all cultures and their important contributions to our society. The appropriate use of technology is an integral part of this course. Goals - To apply effective decision making skills in situations affecting the human body. - To examine how genetic factors, environmental factors, and lifestyle choices determine personal wellness. - To apply proper nutrition and physical activity practices to everyday life. - To develop an understanding of various social, emotional, and mental health concerns found in today’s society. - To investigate the various health resources and agencies available in the community. - To examine the biological and socio-economic impacts of substance use and abuse. - To analyze how communicable and non-communicable diseases and possible treatments affect human body systems. - To analyze the structures and functions of the endocrine and reproductive systems with emphasis on related diseases and disorders and review of possible treatments. - To identify the various contraceptive methods with an emphasis on abstinence. - To recognize the early signs of pregnancy and explain the need for early prenatal care. - To describe the changes which occur in the developing baby and mother during pregnancy. - To examine the symptoms, causes, prevention, and treatments of various sexually transmitted infections including HIV. 1 Veterans Tribute Career & Technical Academy 2014-2015 Course Expectations - To demonstrate knowledge and skills needed for injury prevention and care of minor injuries. - To develop environmental health awareness and consumer health literacy. - To identify health-related career opportunities. Students should not turn in assignments late. If an assignment is turned in after its due date, the grade will be penalized 10% for every day it is late. Assignments will only be accepted up to five days following the due date, unless alternative arrangements are made with the teacher. Makeup Work: The teacher shall provide an opportunity for a student to make up missed work due to any absence, and students shall be held accountable for the work. When a student is absent, the educational experiences lost during that absence might be irretrievable because the instruction and interaction in the instructional setting cannot be duplicated through makeup work. 2 Veterans Tribute Career & Technical Academy 2014-2015 Course Expectations Per CCSD Regulation 5113 After any absence, a secondary student is required to initiate contact with the teacher(s) to obtain appropriate makeup work within three school days immediately following the absence. Once contact has been made with the teacher(s), specific makeup work must be completed and returned to the teacher(s) within a reasonable length of time, to be determined by the teacher and communicated to the student/parent or legal guardian. The makeup work must be returned to the teacher(s) by the specified due date if it is to be acknowledged. Students shall be allowed a minimum of three (3) days to complete makeup work. School sponsored activities are not a valid excuse for missing class work. It is the responsibility of the student to ensure that work is turned in on time. Since school sponsored activities are preplanned, please make arrangements to turn your work in early if a problem may arise. Resists team work Refusal to participate in classroom discussion, project, or demonstrations Rarely brings materials Behavior expectations: All students are expected to behave appropriately while at school, on the bus, or at any extracurricular activities. In order to guarantee a successful learning environment for all students, the following school-wide discipline plan has been formulated. It is based on the expectation that: · No student will interfere with teacher instruction. · No student will interfere with another student’s learning. · No student will engage in any behavior that is not in his/her best interest or in the best interest of others. 3 Veterans Tribute Career & Technical Academy 2014-2015 Course Expectations When students engage in inappropriate behavior, a progressive discipline plan will be followed that will include firm, fair, and consistent action. Depending on the infraction, the discipline may include: · Warning · Parental Contact . Required Parent Conference · Suspension Students may be subject to a range of disciplinary actions based on the nature of the infraction, the number and type of behavioral referrals, and the frequency at which the student is referred for disciplinary action. Students and parents are responsible for reviewing the CCSD Student Behavior Guidelines (available on line at CCSD.net. type in search student behavior), and the Student Handbook. Depending on severity of the student action, the teacher may send the student to the Discipline Office at any time. TARDY POLICY Students are expected to be in the class and seated when the tardy bell rings including first period. Students have four minutes to pass from one class to another. There is no warning bell. Students arriving late to school for any reason will be marked tardy. If the student is more than 30 minutes late to any class period, the student will be marked absent. If the student is late due to a medical appointment, the parent/guardian must provide documentation to the attendance clerk when the student arrives on campus. If the student needs to use the restroom, the student must arrive to their next classroom first, and then obtain permission/restroom pass from the instructor. Students tardy to class will be subject to the following discipline: First Infraction Verbal Warning Second Infraction Parent Contact by Teacher Third Infraction Required Parent Conference (RPC-A) Fourth Infraction Required Parent Conference (RPC-T) Fifth Infraction Suspension Cheating/Plagiarism/Code of Honor: CCSD requires every student and parent/guardian to sign a Code of Honor the first week of school. There is a clear expectation that all students will perform academic tasks with honor and integrity, with the support of parents, staff, faculty, administration, and the community. The learning process requires students to think, process, organize and create their own ideas. Throughout this process, students gain knowledge, self-respect, and ownership in the work that they do. These qualities provide a solid foundation for life skills, impacting people positively throughout their lives. Cheating and plagiarism violate the fundamental learning process and compromise personal integrity and one’s honor. Students demonstrate academic honesty and integrity by not cheating, plagiarizing or using information unethically in any way. Consequences: (Depending on the scope of the infraction) First Infraction: Counseling Referral , Documentation in Deans' Office, Loss of Credit for Assignment, "U" in Citizenship and possible Required Parent Conference (RPC) Second Infraction: Required RPC, Loss of Credit for Assignment, "U" in Citizenship and possible Suspension Third and Fourth Infraction: Suspension, Loss of Credit and possible Referred to Zone School Graphic Material statement: Due to the curriculum that will be covered in the program classes, the class content and materials may be of a mature and graphic nature.
