Course Description: Students will practice basic study skills and reading techniques. This course may be taken twice for credit. Students must have completed ESL 432 with a "C" or better or have been placed into ESL 132.

Requirements:

1.

Students must have a notebook containing all class materials and brought to class daily. Notebook should contain four dividers for Homework, Tests & Quizzes, Journal & Reading Record Sheets.

2.

Students will spend about four – six hours a week on homework. Homework must be completed before class begins. Late homework will not be accepted unless approved by the teacher. If you are unprepared, you may be asked to leave and marked absent.

3.

All students must spend just over 1 hour per week, 18 hours total, in the Reading Lab. You will record your work on the ESL

132 Reading Record Sheets. Two hours a week is the maximum amount of time you can stay in the lab and receive credit. This work will be put in your folder and half turned in at midterm, and all turned in at end of semester.

4.

Students are expected to actively participate in all class activities. Discussion and sharing ideas are effective ways to learn. All reading is to be annotated. That means you are expected to write in your textbook. Do your homework so you are prepared.

5.

Regular and punctual attendance is essential to succeed in ESL 132. Anyone absent more than 10 hours of class will not pass this class. Three tardies will be counted as one absence. Leaving during class will be counted as a tardy.

Students are responsible for contacting another student to find out work missed due to absence.

If you are going to miss a test or other graded assignment, notify me immediately and make up the missed exam or composition the next time class meets. It is your responsibility to arrange the makeup. Missing assignments will be given a zero. Only one make-up will be allowed.

No make-up for spelling/voc quizzes.

Anyone caught cheating will be given an” F” on that assignment. If you let someone copy your assignment, you will also receive an “F”. Anyone caught cheating twice can be dropped from the class. Plagiarizing, using someone else's words is cheating. Copying from the internet or a book is also cheating.

9.

Students must respect their instructor and classmates , or they will be asked to leave and marked absent. Disrespectful behavior includes use of cell phones , loud or rude behavior, sleeping in class, or not participating.

Must be written in blue or black ink, double spaced, and on one side of the paper only .

1) Assignments should be doublespaced and neatly written or typed

(internet research assignments must be handwritten).

2) At the top of the paper, write your full name, and the date the homework is due.

When you get information from the internet, list the internet citation . example:

Write the meaning of the word from the dictionary and also write the part of speech

(example: noun, pronoun, verb).

The Journal allows you to write freely without fear of being graded the traditional way.

3) The margins should be one inch on each side-top, bottom, left, and right. Each paragraph should be indented ½ inch .

4) Homework due should be stapled together.
