Dear Parish Family,
Today we come to the end of the series of
Gospels from John about the Eucharist. Jesus
asks his disciple (and us) whether they want
to leave after hearing what he has to say. Like
the tribes of Israel gathered before Joshua in the first
reading, every day we have the choice of serving the
Lord or not. May our prayer today be for the wisdom to
make the right choice?
THE CHOICE: “What a hard saying! How can we accept
it?” murmured Jesus’ disciples. He insisted his word was
Spirit and life, yet many could not see their way to follow
him. That was their free choice. The great mystery for
Christ and his bride, the church, is that we believe in him
as he dies to give us real life—a share in divine life
opened to us in baptism. We are his body: its living parts.
Like Peter and the rest, we have no other place to go for
eternal life. How do we choose? Text, Philip J.
Sandstrom, STD © 2000, OCP. All rights reserved.

PRAYER FOR LIFE: That all who follow Christ
may realize their obligation to work for respect
for each human life, we pray
FAMILY CONNECTION: When a child is baptized, the
parents speak on behalf of the child in
professing the faith in which the child is to
be baptized. The parents promise to teach
their child this faith so that they may one day
accept this faith as his or her own. In the example of
Simon Peter, we learn that each person must also make
his or her own profession of faith in Jesus as the one sent
by God to save us. We pray for our children as they
mature in the faith that they may learn that Jesus alone
has the words of eternal life and that they may choose to
follow the way of Christian discipleship.
and fasted daily, but nothing seemed to work, so she
consulted St. Ambrose for guidance. Through the
intervention of God, the two of them managed to lead
Augustine to the waters of baptism. St. Monica
exemplifies that unconditional love and persistence are
portals for God’s saving grace.

8/28 St. Augustine of Hippos, Bp. & Doctor St.
Augustine was born to a pagan father and a
devout Christian mother. This wild, unruly
young man later became one of Western
Christianity’s most influential figures. He tried
it all – living with a women, fathering a child
out of wedlock, and dabbling in heretical
beliefs similar to Gnosticism. Through his mother’s prayer
and a friendship with Ambrose, he eventually converted
to Christianity, was ordained a priest and then became
bishop of Hippo in 396. We are ever indebted to him for
his writings on: original sin, just war, human will, divine
predestination, the Trinity and Christology.

SAINTS FOR THIS WEEK
8/24 St. Bartholomew, Apostle: There is little
reference to St. Bartholomew in the Gospel
other than the fact that he was one of the
original Twelve Apostles. He is mentioned in
Acts of the Apostles as one of the disciples
waiting for the descent of the Holy Spirit. An early
Christian community in India claims St. Bartholomew as it
founder.
8/27 St. Monica: St. Monica knew the pain of
disappointment, an unfaithful husband named
Patricius who drank too much, and a
promiscuous son, St. Augustine of Hippo, who
lived an immoral youth. Through patience and
love, her husband has a change of heart, choosing to
become a Christian. St. Augustine’s conversion was a
much more difficult task. St. Monica prayed constantly
A FRESH PERSPECTIVE ON THE SUNDAY
READINGS
HIS WORD TODAY by Rev. William J. Reilly
“If it does not please you to serve the Lord,
decide today whom you will serve, the gods your
fathers served beyond the River or the gods of the
Amorites…As for me and my household we will
serve the Lord.”… “This saying is hard; who can
accept it?’… ‘Does this shock you?...But there are
some of you who do not believe…For this reason I
have told you that no one can come to me unless it
is granted him by my Father.’”
We make countless decisions every day. What will I
wear, what route will I take, what do I wish to eat. They
are routine decisions. Joshua calls our attention to decide
what God we will serve, as well as how we will serve
Him.
He spoke about the pagan gods, yet we are confronted
by gods or idols, such as money, prestige, reputation or
material things. They secretly occupy our time and
attention. Today the word of God can shake us, or in the
words of Jesus ‘shock’ us.
Isn’t it about time to take stock of our lives and ask
what we can do to draw closer to our God? If we are
honest, don’t we get caught sometimes only going
through the motions? Does my prayer life, my worship
and my service reflect a decision made from my heart
and not just my head? Joshua told his followers to decide
then and there and not put it off. The Lord looks for my
decision today.
YOU DID IT FOR ME
Kevin* made a mistake as a teenager and
spent years in jail. When he had served his
sentence, he returned to society with no
job, no money, and no direction. A
neighbor suggested that he visit his local Catholic
Charities, where he was surprised to be treated with
respect and dignity. A case manager helped him meet his
basic needs while finding a full-time job, and has set
goals that will help him give back to kids at-risk of
making the same mistakes he did.
In communities across the country, Catholic Charities
agencies are living out Pope Francis’ call to put an end to
the “economy of exclusion.” To learn more, please visit

A FAMILY PERSPECTIVE: Even though many found the
teachings of Jesus ‘difficult’, He did not back down. In
our families it is important to say what is difficult to hear,
to speak the truth with kindness, to correct with love and
guide with understanding.
“CHOOSE LIFE”: “Assisted suicide is the deceptivelyattractive face of euthanasia. The most compelling cases
grip our attention and sway the debate, and so the
[Canadian Supreme] Court opens the door to assisted
suicide, all the while seeming to do less than it actually
has done by surrounding its action with a set of limiting
conditions, seeking to guarantee informed consent, as if
that were the key issue. But the state is authorizing the
killing of an innocent person, whatever controls are in
place, and even those limitations can over time be swept
away, leading to the more widespread practice of
euthanasia,” as the European experience shows.
