Dear Parish Family,
St. Paul has an important message for us
today as we gather at God’s invitation: “All
bitterness, fury, anger, shouting, and reviling
must be removed from you.” While St. Paul
could not have known about our talk radio or daytime
television or even the stat of politics in our country today,
it is clear that he is onto something. Perhaps our prayer
today and this week can be to heed Paul’s words and
strive for more civil dialogue in our country, our city and
even in our church.
JOURNEY BREAD: “I am the living bread that comes
down from heaven.” Food is the strongest indication of
God’s care for the chosen ones. Elijah wished for death
until the angel of the Lord came a second time to urge
him to eat so that he could walk to God’s mountain.
Jesus comes in the Eucharist to nourish his body on the
way to the New Jerusalem. Each one of us, as God’s
child, is urged to forgive as God forgives, to imitate Jesus
and pass through his cross to the Father. Eat and live!

PRAYER FOR LIFE: That Jesus the Bread of
Life may nourish our lives and transform our
society from a culture of death into a Culture
of Life that welcomes and reveres every person, we pray.
FAMILY CONNECTION: Today's Gospel focuses our
attention on our faith in Jesus' presence in
the Eucharist. Jesus is the bread of life. He
gives us his Body and Blood as bread so that
we may have eternal life. When we receive
the Body and Blood of Jesus in the Eucharist, our lives
begin to reflect the reality that our communion with Jesus
prepares in us. Our Eucharist leads us to live as people of
the promise, confident that we will one day share the
fullness of life with God.
Question of the Week: What is “Elijah’s desert” in my
own life? How does my partaking of the bread of life
strengthen me for my life’s journey?
PRAYER SHAWL MINISTRY: If you would like to
provide a shawl or lap blanket for someone who could
benefit from the comfort, please contact Gabrielle Dyl
a973-713-0280 or. If you have questions about the
ministry or would like to join us on Thursday evenings at
7:30 pm at St. Thomas, call Renee Ferreri at 518-3215236 or rferreri44@hotmail.com.

SAINTS FOR THIS WEEK
August 10 – St. Lawrence, Deacon & Martyr – one
of the 7 deacons of the early church, fell victim
to the anti-Christian persecutions launched by
the emperor Valerian. Legend claims that he
was martyred by being roasted on a gridiron.
However, most historians believe he was
beheaded several days after Pope Sixtus II
was. According to tradition, his death brought an end to
idolatry and led to the conversion of Rome.
August 11 – St. Clare, virgin – inspired by her close
friend St. Francis of Assisi, Clare renounced her
wealth to found the Poor Clares, a community
of nuns devoted to a simple, austere life of
prayer.
August 14 Maximilian Kolbe – Polish born Maximillian
was a Franciscan friar whose devotion to Mary
continues to affect the Church today. He
established the Militia of the Immaculata, a
Marian apostolate that uses prayer as its main
weapon in spiritual battles. He was eventually arrested
and sent to Auschwitz. He volunteered to die in place of
another prisoner and was put in the starvation bunker.
Still alive two weeks later, Maximilian was injected with a
lethal dose of carbolic acid, dying with a radiant, calm
look upon his face.
A FRESH PERSPECTIVE ON THE SUNDAY
READINGS
“Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with which
you were sealed for the day of redemption. All
bitterness, fury, anger, shouting and reviling must
be removed from you, along with all malice. And
be kind to one another, compassionate, forgiving
one another as God has forgiven you in Christ.”
When Paul wrote to the Ephesians, he included a
shopping list for what we need and what we should
eliminate from our lives. The KFC we can easily
remember. They are virtues which we seek and surely
manifest in many ways. The negatives we might
overlook, and perhaps do not see them as barriers or
obstacles when we consider receiving the Eucharist.
Paul is not referring to simple annoyances, as heat or
storms, but as real vices directed at other people. Let’s
offer a remedy: First pray for the person or persons
against whom we direct rage, fury and anger. Second,
when we find it hard to ‘forgive and forget’ then
remember, but without bitterness. The vices make us less
human, less loving and selfish, less lovable.
The Lord speaks to us as He did Elijah ‘Get up and eat,
else the journey will be too long for you.’
The gift of the Eucharist offers us even greater spiritual
strength to live the way Paul taught the Ephesians.
YOU DID IT FOR ME
Maria* hadn’t been to a dentist in years,
and smiling caused her physical and
emotional pain because of her rotting
teeth. Every time she opened her mouth,
she’d cover it with her hand because she was
embarrassed by the way she looked. A Catholic Charities
free dental clinic provided her with the care she needed,
and now she has a smile she can be proud of once again.

PROJECT RACHEL is a process that leads people to
healing and reconciliation after an abortion experience.
To talk to someone about beginning this journey, please
call 973-777-8818, ext. 272. All calls are confidential.
A FAMILY PERSPECTIVE: In today’s gospel Jesus tells
us: Do not work for what perishes.” Give your life to what
endures such as the family history you are creating, the
love and mutual respect which bonds you together, the
memories you share and the forgiveness generously
given. These are the true treasures that are worth
working and dying for.
“CHOOSE LIFE”: “Women experiencing an unplanned
pregnancy also deserve unplanned joy.” We need to work
together to systematically eliminate the root causes that
drive so many women to abortion—primarily the lack of
financial resources and lack of emotional support.”
