RENAL PROTECTION PROTOCOL – Patient Instructions
Your Provider has scheduled you for a test in which a contrast dye is injected. The Renal Protection
Protocol has been ordered along with this test to help protect your kidney(s) while processing this dye.
The following are directions for this protocol:
1. DIET: No solid food 6 hours prior to your test. You are encouraged to drink clear liquids
(water, plain coffee or tea, soda, broth, juices without pulp & which you can see through) up to 2
hours prior to the rest, unless you are on a fluid restriction. You are also encouraged to drink extra
fluids for 48 hrs after the procedure, unless fluid restricted.
2. IV fluids: You have been scheduled for IV fluids one hour prior to and approximately 1 hour
after the test. This is administered at Encircle Health, Outpatient Treatment Center. Please report
there as scheduled, prior to your test.
3. Creatinine blood test: You will need to have a repeated creatinine blood test 48 hours following
the CT scan to check to make sure your kidneys are functioning properly. Please go to the lab for
the test and then call our office afterwards for the results.
4. If you are taking any of the following medications, they will need to be stopped temporarily
as follows:
a. Metformin (other names: glugophage, glumetza, riomet) Hold the day prior, day of and
48 hours after the test. Do not restart the medication until a creatinine level (lab test) is
rechecked 48 hours after your test and your provider authorizes you to restart. Please call
our office following your lab test for that result. Contact your PCP if questions on
checking your blood sugar level while off this med.
b. ACE Inhibitors (angiotensive-converting enzyme inhibitors), including accupril
(quinapril), accuretic, aceon, altace (ramipril), benazepril (lotensin), capoten (captopril),
capozide, enalapril (vasotec), fosinopril (monopril), lexxel, lisinopril (prinivil), lotrel,
mavik (trandolopril), moexipril (univasc), tarka, uniretic, vaseretic, zestoretic, zestril, are
to be held the day prior, day of, and day after test.
c. ARB’s (angiotensive receptor blockers) including atacand (candesartan),avapro,
(irbesartan), benicar (olmesartan), cozaar (losartan), diovan (valsartan), micardis
(telmisartan), teveten (eprosartan) also should be held the day prior, day of, and day after
test.
d. NSAID’s (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) such as aspirin, Ibuprofen, Aleve,
Naproxen are to be held the day prior to and day of the test.
e. Diuretics. Hold any medications considered to be diuretics (water pills) the day of the
test. (ex: Lasix (Furosemide), HCTZ (hydrochlorothiazide), etc)
