The Changing Face of Rehabilitation for Swallowing Impairment and the Re-emergence of Surface EMG Biofeedback. Maggie-Lee Huckabee PhD 30-31 October 2014 Details This course is designed for Speech and Language Therapists working with adults with dysphagia (problems swallowing), with a focus on adult neurology. It will provide an in depth look at use of surface electromyography (sEMG) biofeedback as an evidence-based treatment modality for dysphagia management. Learning outcomes include: Describe concepts of strength and skill training paradigms and identify patient populations for which each may be appropriate Recognise the benefits and limitation of sEMG biofeedback as a treatment modality Differentiate treatment plans which incorporate sEMG biofeedback as an adjunct to skill and strength training Identify additional instrumental modalities that may facilitate treatment More from Maggie-Lee Huckabee… ‘Rehabilitation practitioners have devised a number of behavioural strategies to alter biomechanical features of swallowing pathophysiology. These techniques have been designed primarily for the purpose of peripheral muscle strengthening in response to the presentation of pharyngeal residual on videofluoroscopic swallowing study (VFSS). Strength training for swallowing rehabilitation, as is currently emphasised in clinical practice, may be a very appropriate approach for some patient populations. But it may not always be an appropriate approach, and indeed may sometimes be maladaptive and exacerbate dysphagic presentation. An alternative approach of skill training has been emerging as a potential approach to facilitate neural change in patients with neurogenic dysphagia and represents a substantial shift in rehabilitative paradigms. The first morning of this two-day workshop will evaluate standard diagnostic methods (VFSS, clinical assessment) but with an emphasis on identifying pathophysiologic features that are key to defining specific and refined rehabilitation plans. Practice on interpreting VFSS and linking to existing behavioural rehabilitation approaches will be emphasised. The afternoon will explore definitions and avenues for skill training in swallowing management. Emphasis will be placed on translating the theories of skill training to the practice of dysphagia service delivery. sEMG biofeedback as a treatment adjunct will be introduced within the context of skill training paradigms. On day two, the utilisation of sEMG biofeedback as a treatment adjunct will be further explored with treatment paradigms targeted toward relaxation, motor programming and muscle strengthening. A series of clinical cases will provide the foundation for active discussion and problem solving surrounding mechanisms of motor learning and skill acquisition in swallowing recovery. Newly developed software for skill training in swallowing rehabilitation will be presented. Alternative modalities for biofeedback will be discussed. The afternoon sessions (limited registration) will provide an opportunity for clinicians to explore instrumentation directly.’ Location Greenwich, London (near Westcombe Park train station) Further workshop details to be provided on receipt of payment Cost (separate booking forms) One and a half day course (all day Oct 30 and morning of Oct 31) Option of additional half day practical workshop using sEMGdevices (afternoon of Oct 31) (Including lunch) £210 £70 If you would like to book both sections of the course, we request you fill out and return both booking forms, with your payment. The practical portion of the course has limited enrolment; places will be reserved by receipt of payment.
