Napa Field Trip
Saturday August 22nd
Organized by the EERI Northern California Chapter
Proposed Itinerary (updated 8/11/2015)
9:00 – 10:15
En Route – Ashby BART Station to Saintsbury Winery
10:15 – 11:15 Saintsbury Winery
The field trip begins at this winery, located directly above the West Napa Fault allowing
views of the surface fault rupture through the vineyards. The tour may also include a
look inside a facility that had experienced tank and barrel damage in the August 2014
earthquake.
11:15 – 11:30 En Route – Saintsbury Winery to Napa Barrel Care
11:30 – 12:30 Napa Barrel Care
The facility had both structural and non-structural damage in the August 2014 event.
The tour will provide an opportunity to discuss building and barrel damage as well as the
subsequent repair/replacement/mitigation of the facility.
12:30 – 12:50 En Route – Napa Barrel Care to Downtown Napa
12:50 – 2:30
Downtown Napa
First things first, let’s eat! We’ll arrange for a lunch downtown and follow up lunch with
a short walking tour of downtown Napa. The walking tour will go by a number of URM
retrofit structures and discussion on city recovery.
2:30 – 2:50
En Route – Downtown Napa to Artesa Vineyards & Winery
2:50 – 4:15
Artesa Vineyards & Winery
We’ll cap the day at Artesa which offers gorgeous views of Napa Valley. We’ll have an
opportunity to reflect on the day, and for those who are interested, taste wine from the
region. (Note: Wine tasting may not be included in the registration cost. We are
working hard to secure a reasonable deal and balance the transportation costs. If there
is an additional cost, it would be ~$20 extra to taste at Artesa. We’ll figure out the
details in the coming days.)
4:15 – 5:30
En Route – Downtown Napa to Ashby Bart Station
Confirmed Technical Speakers
Throughout the day we will be privileged to hear from a variety of earthquake, geology, engineer and
wine experts. You’ll also be surrounded by EERI members who may have anecdotal stories to share –
we welcome folks to share their knowledge throughout the day at the sites, or on the bus. To
supplement speakers from our stops we’re lucky to have confirmed the following members to speak as
well.
Dr. Ken Verosub is a Distinguished Professor in the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences at UC
Davis. He is geophysicist who studies the magnetic properties of rocks, sediments and soils. However,
over the years he has been increasingly involved with issues at the interface between human activity
and geologic processes, such as earthquake preparedness, wine and geology, global climate change and
deep fresh groundwater. On this trip he will talk about how plate tectonic processes have created the
terroir of the Napa Valley as well as specific factors that influence the terroir of the Carneros District
Cooper Brossy is an California Engineering Geologist with Fugro Consultants, Inc. who focuses on
Quaternary geology and geologic hazard studies. Following the Napa earthquake, he and several
colleagues conducted post-event reconnaissance, contributing observations and data to the California
Earthquake Clearinghouse. Cooper will provide an overview of the event, highlighting the surface
rupture and some of the more recent findings of the geoscience community in their efforts to
understand the earthquake and its effects.
