Your Responsibility
The task ahead of you is never as great
as the power behind you and to make
Grand State University Valley a safe
environment it starts with you.
GVSU Pew Campus Security’s top priority
is providing you with a safe campus.
While Grand Valley State University is a
safe campus it’s important that everyone
within our community takes responsibility
for their own personal safety. Tragedy
provides an unfortunate reminder of the
importance of being prepared for disaster
to strike. A campus can only be as safe
and prepared as the community allows it
to be.
Fire safety is everyone’s responsibility in
addition to the GVSU Pew Campus
Security Department and supporting
agencies such as Grand Rapids Fire
Department,
Grand
Rapids
Police
Department,
Kent
Country
Sheriff
Department, Michigan State Police, Life
and AMR EMS count on you to make this
a safe environment for everyone to work,
live, and learn.

Fire Prevention
The information contained in this
brochure is intended to provide students
and employees at Grand Valley State
University with a better understanding of
the fire safety expectations within the
university and to further encourage a
safe campus environment. These basic
guidelines are to be followed when
faced with various fire emergencies.
GVSU Pew Campus Security maintains
a 24-hour a day, 7 days a week, and
365 days a year service to assist the
Pew Campus community. Officers within
the department are trained on how to
respond to fire emergencies. All
university facilities have 24-7 monitored
fire protection.
What can I Do
Identify and understand the fire
hazards in your environment at all
times. Your awareness, followed by
an action plan will improve your
chance of survival.
Violations of University rules and regulations
are documented and corrective action taken
by the Dean of Student's Office. When
violations of state law occur, the person(s)
responsible are handled through the Grand
Rapids Police Department.
Fire Equipment
The University's Housing Office has taken a
proactive approach in limiting certain items
allowed in residential areas. Policies prohibit
fire hazards in housing rooms such as,
candles and incense, hot plates, toaster
ovens, and space heaters.
The Facilities Management Office takes a
strong fire safe approach with the
construction of new residential buildings.
University growth over the past decade has
provided opportunity for new residential
buildings. The approach to the construction
of these buildings has been to include state
of the art fire detection and suppression
systems. Existing residential buildings have
been updated to include comprehensive fire
detection and warning systems. All hallways
are equipped with fire extinguishers and all
apartments have extinguishers. Residence
area doors are one-hour fire rated.
Each living center on our campuses are
equipped with fire detection systems that
include manual pull stations, horns, strobe
lights, smoke detectors, and heat detectors.
Pew Campus housing units contain
sprinkler protection, as well as smoke
detectors on each floor. The alarm
systems and fire extinguishers are
routinely inspected.

Fire Extinguishers
Extinguishers are tools for personal
protection, not property protection. The
university holds the position that it
prefers everyone to evacuate an area
involved in fire. Only those employees
trained in the use of fire extinguishers
may attempt to extinguish small
controllable fires.

designed to fight small fires.
