Frederic 6-12 School Counseling About Us Supporting the academic, social-emotional, and post-secondary development of our students. We believe ALL students can find success with the right tools, work ethic, and motivation. Be Excellent! 11th Grade Students on campus at WITC – Rice Lake. Connecting Coursework and PostSecondary Options Course registration season is upon us! As the school counselor, this means I am working overtime to convince and cajole students into better understanding how and why the classes they are taking now, in high school (or middle school, even!) matter to their future. It’s not easy. None of us have a crystal ball, and even for students who seem to have a strong leaning towards a certain trajectory, we really don’t know where our students will land after high school. Given the shifting and changing technological and information driven economy, we focus on the following areas for developing our students: Critical thinking – willing to ask tough questions, cite evidence, and understand the many, complex frameworks at play Strong work ethic Curiosity – the interest and motivation to ask why? High reading and math skills Contact Phone: 715.327.4223 x 1101 Email: montgomeryj@frederic.k12.wi.us Web: http://www.frederic.k12.wi.us Follow me on Twitter @fhschoolcounsel Documenting senior post-secondary planning. Reading to Your Child: Good for their learning & your relationship Frederic students get hands on experience with manufacturing equipment at WITC. Reading & Math Intervention Class As State and National Standards for learning increase to keep pace with the competition of the global economy, Frederic 6-12 School is making sure our students are prepared for the rigor of 9th grade by asking students to spend additional time during the school day to increase their literacy and math skills. By utilizing data results from the MAP tests, Ms. Sears and Ms. Juneski develop small group curriculum to address the gaps in learning for each student. We just completed our Winter MAP testing and noticed that many of our Middle School students receiving this extra intervention during the school day, increased their score considerably. At Frederic 6-12, we understand that how a child performs on a particular standardized test is not the end-all-be-all. However, by utilizing data points and looking at trends, our teachers can focus their instruction to meet the unique needs of our students, which is critical for good teaching and learning to occur. Don’t hesitate to ask staff if you have a question about your student’s current levels or growth. Research abounds regarding the importance of reading to our children each day, especially in the early years of their development prior to Kindergarten. Many of us loose this quality time with our elementary age children as schedules demand more of our time, technology out-competes books for our kids’ attention, and the stress of daily life gets in the way of family rituals. The Middle School Anti-Bullying club promotes #kindness by collecting compliments and sharing the positive remarks publicly. Many of our students complain that they don’t like to read. As a parent, you can set a great example for them Consider (re)establishing 20 minutes a day, a few times a week, to simply read to your adolescent. Paul Oman joined the Anti-Bullying initiative at Frederic 6-12. Student leaders created presentations to raise awareness about the negative impact that bullying and mean behavior can cause on others in our school community. Through music, storytelling, visual art, and videos, students shared their pain and resilience in overcoming their own experiences with bullying. Paul Oman performed a live, visual painting throughout the student presentation. Paul’s message highlighted the importance of contribution. He held up the idea that we all matter and that our actions contribute to the Frederic Community – for the better and for the worse. His paintings, which emphasize the strength of our positive connections with one another, will be on public display at the Frederic 6-12 School.
