INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC Education Queensland provides a program of Instrumental Music tuition in many Primary and Secondary Schools in String, Brass, Woodwind and Percussion. Ensemble experience is provided through the formation of concert bands, orchestras and other ensembles. The program becomes an integral part of the students’ music education. Instruction takes place on a group basis with 3-6 children learning together. Our school provides instruction in the following areas for the appropriate year levels: Strings: Yrs 3+ violin, viola, ‘cello, bass Woodwind: Yrs 5+ flute, clarinet, saxophone Brass: Yrs 5+ trumpet, trombone, baritone, tuba, bass guitar Percussion: Yrs 5+ tuned, untuned. Nundah School has a limited number of instruments available for loan to students. You may be asked to purchase or hire an instrument for your child after 12 months on a school instrument. This doesn’t include larger instruments such as the baritone, tuba or double bass. Before purchasing a second hand instrument, parents are advised to consult instrumental teachers or to consider the hiring schemes available at local music stores. Students who have their own instrument and pass the selection criteria will automatically be included in the program. All instruments require consumable items such as reeds, oil, cleaning cloths, rosin, books, drum sticks, stands and practice pads that won’t be provided by the school. Students who don’t honour their commitment to complete at least one year on an instrument won’t be considered for reassessment on a different instrument. Under these circumstances, the Principal, Instrumental Instructor and the Parent will need to discuss any desired changes with the student. Students will be selected for the program according to various criteria such as students’ ability to learn, musical aptitude, physical characteristics and student and parent commitment to daily practice and regular attendance at lessons and rehearsals. Remember, initial enrolment in the class is for a minimum of one year. Further information regarding termination of lessons and commitment of both students and parents is contained in the school’s Music Handbook which is available on our school website. MARCHING BAND The marching band is an important part of the Nundah State School tradition and extensive music program. Although no longer competitive, the band performs in tattoos, parades, festivals, Anzac Day marches and at fetes and is a fine ambassador for our School. The band plays for our School parade each week. Band leaders are usually chosen from Year 7. Those students who make a commitment to this group are expected to attend practices and outings. In keeping with our School’s music policy, students are asked to commit themselves for a minimum of one year. Band members learn to work as a team. The disciplined professional attitude they gain can only benefit them throughout their schooling. Prospective band members can access fife lessons with Teachers in term 4 each year. CHOIRS Under the direction of the Music Specialist Teacher and classroom teachers, LP choir draws students from year 2, Junior choir from years 3 and 4, Senior choir from years 5 to 7, Boyzonly choir from years 3 + This gives an opportunity for members to extend their musical ability through choral work. As with all sections of the Music Program, children are encouraged to work as a team and exercise self-discipline. Their musical appreciation is also extended through their involvement in the choir. The choirs may take part in Competitions but their performances are now mainly on School Assemblies, Concerts and Community activities. It is hoped that, after committing themselves to the choir for a minimum of one year, the students will be keen to continue and, thereby, help the newer members each year to progress at a faster rate. GUITAR GROUP All year 7 students learn the acoustic guitar and some of these students commit to being a part of the guitar group. UKULELE GROUP Our year 6 students now learn the ukulele in class music lessons after our parents donated money to enable the purchase of these instruments. Our Music Advisory Group meets regularly and we encourage all parents of children involved in the Program to attend these meetings. It gives parents an opportunity to be aware of what is happening in the Music Program and to have a voice in planning and encouraging the students.
