Description of how the department runs the program The Department of Control System Optimization (CSO) was founded in 1969 on the basis of the Laboratory of Control located at the Faculty of Manufacture Management, created by the initiative of the Rector of Tomsk Polytechnic Institute, prof. A.A. Vorobyov and the Head of the Laboratory, prof. V.Z. Yampolskiy. Presently the Department is a part of the Institute of Cybernetics. Mission of the Institute is generation, proliferation, and application of knowledge in the sphere of applied mathematics, computer engineering, information technologies, and control systems in the process of conducting fundamental and applied research, also training and retraining of engineering and scientific personnel. The Institute's long-term strategic goal in line with its mission is the creation of conditions and incentives for the development of innovation activity and training in compliance with the world standards. Unique feature: the Department's development and formation of academic and laboratory base was inseparably linked with the development of computer technologies in Russia and abroad. The Department of CSO is a recognized leader of TPU in the sphere of mathematical support and software for computer equipment. In 2007–2009 the Department took part in realization of TPU Innovative Education Program "Preemptive training of elite specialists and world-class specialist teams in data telecommunications systems and technologies". As the result of implementing the Innovative Education Program the Institute of Cybernetics became home to the Centre for Advanced IT Specialists Training operating a supercomputer cluster with the performance of more than 3 teraflops.
