Salutation by Head of the Department
Dear Prospective Student!
You are invited to study on the Bachelor's Degree program 230700 Applied Computing.
This is one of the most promising and demanded majors. Furthermore, it is versatile, which is
demonstrated by the bachelor specialization: Applied Computing (in Economics). A specialist in
this field is well-informed with fundamental knowledge in information technology and
professional knowledge in economics.
Distinctive features: training on this program provides an opportunity to obtain profound
knowledge of various aspects of life cycle of information systems and their components in
micro- and macroeconomics. In the process of training students acquire knowledge, skills, and
experience needed to solve economic tasks effectively using modern information technologies
and information systems. Specialists in computing in economics possess the mastery of
information systems and the development methods of database management systems; they are
skilled in implementation and use of modern information systems in various branches of
economics.
Spheres of our graduates’ professional activities involve commercial and state-owned
organizations that operate information systems: bank management, large manufacturing
enterprises, small and medium-sized businesses, telecommunication service providers,
computation centers, etc. Our alumni enjoy a stable demand on the labor market together with
promising perspectives of further professional development and career advancement.
Bachelor's program graduates are offered opportunities to continue their education on a
master's program with majors in economics or computing and information technology.
Welcome!
Description of how the department runs the program
The Department of Control System Optimization (CSO) was founded in 1969 on the
basis of the Laboratory of Control located at the Faculty of Manufacture Management, created
by the initiative of the Rector of Tomsk Polytechnic Institute, prof. A.A. Vorobyov and the Head
of the Laboratory, prof. V.Z. Yampolskiy. Presently the Department is a part of the Institute of
Cybernetics.
Mission of the Institute is generation, proliferation, and application of knowledge in the
sphere of applied mathematics, computer engineering, information technologies, and control
systems in the process of conducting fundamental and applied research, also training and
retraining of engineering and scientific personnel.
The Institute's long-term strategic goal in line with its mission is the creation of conditions
and incentives for the development of innovation activity and training in compliance with the
world standards.
Unique feature: the Department's development and formation of academic and laboratory
base was inseparably linked with the development of computer technologies in Russia and
abroad. The Department of CSO is a recognized leader of TPU in the sphere of mathematical
support and software for computer equipment. In 2007–2009 the Department took part in
realization of TPU Innovative Education Program "Preemptive training of elite specialists and
world-class specialist teams in data telecommunications systems and technologies". As the result
of implementing the Innovative Education Program the Institute of Cybernetics became home to
the Centre for Advanced IT Specialists Training operating a supercomputer cluster with the
performance of more than 3 teraflops.
Teaching staff: presently the Department's teaching staff includes:
 6 professors
