Lesson Plan Unit/Theme: __SCHOOL_________________________________ Topic: __classroom/school materials______ Essential Question(s): How do classroom environments differ from subject to subject, school to school and country to country? Materials: - Poster with numbers 0-10 - Video with school items - Items and pictures of these items: pencil, pen, eraser, book, paper, notebook, ruler, binder, bag/backpack - Cards, items, bags for relay game Stage I: Reflect - What will students know and be able to do at the end of this lesson? Know: The students will know some classroom vocabulary (singular and plural), numbers 0-10 in context, the structure “Ich habe…” / “Hast du…?”, indefinite articles (ein, eine, einen) as well as “kein/keine/keinen”. Do: The students will be able to retrieve needed items, ask for items and respond, and present to other students what they have in their school bag. Stage II: Warm Up Review numbers 0-10 by counting forward and backward. Watch a short video clip about students in school and count the items seen in the video. The pictures of the items will be displayed on the board/handout and the students just need to write the numbers next to them. Share/compare answers with partner, then the whole class. Stage III: LEARN Link: Point out the lesson objectives for today’s lesson as well as the essential question for the unit. (written in English on the board) Engage and Explain Show the students a bag/backpack and take out one item at a time, introducing the new vocabulary words in the context of the phrase “Ich habe ein/eine/einen…” Introduce the plural forms of the vocabulary words while reviewing the numbers 1-10 in context. Introduce the negation “kein/keine/keinen” and how to use it in the previously learned phrase. Active Learning Interpretive/Receptive Relay race: In groups, the students will have to do a relay race. One person will have to run to the stack of cards, then run to the pile of school items and pick up the item(s) listed on the card, and return to their home and put the items in the backpack. As soon as the first person is finished, the next person starts. Interpersonal/Interactive Take inventory: After the relay game, the groups have to check the contents of their backpack and make sure they have all the items that are on the cards. If they don’t have everything they need, they have to trade with other groups, using the phrases “Hast du ein/eine/einen…?”, “Ja, ich habe ein/eine/einen…”, “Nein, ich habe kein/keine/keinen…”. (The teacher previously puts some items in the bags, so that not all items are available during the relay game Presentational/Productive Presentation: Once the groups have all the items they are supposed to have based on the cards from the relay game, the students will present what they have in the backpack to the class using the vocabulary and phrases practiced in class. Every student should be part of the presentation. and the groups have to talk to each other!!) Reflect The students write about what they have in their own backpack. (in class or homework) Now and Then Tomorrow we will review the classroom items, listen to the presentation of the homework assignment, and learn some expressions used in the classroom. Your final assessment will be to draw a picture of your favorite classroom. You will have to state the school type, describe the classroom environment, and list items used in the classroom as well as classroom routines.
