Shift Duties
You are required to be in the clinic at the time of your shift. Find the tech on duty and let them know
who you are. ASK THE TECHNICIANS IF THEY NEED HELP WITH ANYTHING!
The technicians will either direct you to an emergency case or assign you to another job.
For emergency cases, hospital staff or senior students may ask you to:
 Handle the horse during treatment
 Assist with treatment
 Retrieve necessary supplies for treatment
 Simply observe the case as it happens
 Emergency cases are fast-paced and interesting. PLEASE HOLD ALL QUESTIONS UNTIL
THE EMERGENCY IS OVER AND TREATMENTS HAVE BEEN COMLETED.
For times when there isn’t an emergency case, the technicians may ask you to:
 Complete periodic physical exams and TPRs for in-clinic horses (especially colic cases)
 Assist with treatments for in-clinic horses
 Feed or water horses
 Walk and graze horse outside
 Assist senior students with their cases
 Help technicians in whatever jobs they need done (grooming, mucking out stalls and etc).
There are always jobs that need to be done in the clinic. Be proactive and find out what you can
do to help out the technicians.
STUDYING DURING YOUR SHIFT IS NOT ENCOURAGED!!!! If there is absolutely nothing to do (and
you’ve verified this with the techs), studying is okay…. but it is your responsibility to check and see
what’s going on throughout your shift. If an emergency comes in, it is not the tech’s responsibility
to come and find you!
Where to Put Book bags and Etc.
Due to past thefts that have occurred in the large animal hospital, you are encouraged to store your
purse, wallet and valuables in your locker upstairs. Only bring with you the things you need for your
shift and optional study materials.
At the End of Your Shift
Thank the technician and let them know you are leaving.
Make sure to thank the doctors, residents and students for their time and help.
If you want to be called for later emergencies that come in, leave your number on the white board
Optional Equine Rounds
E-team members will be able to attend ECC rounds at the clinic on Thursdays at 12 pm. Members are
encouraged to attend, as this will give you an idea of what cases are in the clinic for the week.
